Citrus (Episode 6) – out of love

Mei’s father has returned and it’s having a big impact on Mei. Yuzu tries to reassure her, but that seems to make things worse. Knowing that her father won’t return to the academy has taken away Mei’s purpose.
Citrus (Episode 6) – out of love
What happened?
When Mei’s acts coldly to her father, Yuzu jumps in and tries to tell him about how wonderful she’s doing at the academy and how she’s ensured he will be able to come back when he’s ready. However, he’s not coming back. He has no intention of returning to the academy as he has found his purpose in life. Mei is furious. She yells at Yuzu and then shuts herself in her room. Her father apologises to Yuzu for putting her in the middle. Then, they go and get some food for dinner.
Mei still idolises the man her father used to be when he was at the academy. He was strict and disciplined. So, when he left to travel the world, she swore to keep their home and make sure he could return. But the man that returned was not the father she remembered. Now, that he had confirmed he would never come back, she was lost. Everything she had done was to prepare for his return. He didn’t need her. Did anyone need her? Mei turned her attention to Yuzu forcing herself on her, offering to do whatever she wanted. Mei needed a purpose, but that’s not what Yuzu wanted.
The next day at school, Mei was standoffish and cold. Yuzu struggled as she tried to solve this problem. Harumi tried to console her, which seemed to help. However, Yuzu’s mother called her to let her know that Mei’s father was leaving today and she wanted to find Mei so that she could see him off. Yuzu had no idea where Mei was, but she was going to find her. After running around the school forever, Yuzu took control of the intercom and called out to Mei. Mei responded to Yuzu’s summons, but would they make it to the station in time?

What did you think?
While I understand, Mei’s father’s struggles to find his own path in life, I can’t get my head around his behaviour towards Mei. The bottom line is he abandoned her and that’s not all right. Amazingly, he did find someone to look after her, but that was after she had been living alone for five years. He could have found himself without abandoning her and that might have made the transition to who he is now that much easier for her. She was clearly struggling to find her own purpose in life, especially since she had dedicated it to protecting the memory of the father she loved.
That said, this episode delivered a couple of incredible moments. The scene where Mei opened up to Yuzu was dark and cold. It was easy to see why Yuzu wouldn’t want things to progress like that. I feel sorry for Yuzu who is so empathetic that she is constantly second-guessing whether she was right to feel one way or not. Luckily, she got a chance to prove herself once more when she tracked down Mei and got her to the station to say goodbye to her father again. However, it was when Mei lost her nerve that Yuzu stepped up, holding her hand and giving her the confidence to say something.
Then, we finally got the true first kiss. There have been a few false ones, mostly stolen and forced, but this one was different. It came from a happy place and it showed on their faces. It was absolutely worth the wait.

A father’s first duty is to his children. You don’t get to just leave them for years to find yourself. Once children show up, it isn’t just about you. It is about all of you together. Anything less is despicable.
Absolutely. I couldn’t imagine leaving my kids at home to fend for themselves at any age let alone 10. I just hope this is an exaggerated anime thing and not something that actually happens in Japan.
If anime is to be believed, almost everyone is orphaned, abandoned or their parents work out-of-country, thru most of their middle and high school years.
This is true. They also get nosebleeds when they see panties and girls can be regularly seen running to school late with a slice of toast in their mouth.
Here’s a thought: I have never seen a female have a nosebleed at seeing a guys tidy whities. Perhaps men have weaker blood vessels in their noses. I’ve seem people with arms amutated that didn’t bleed as much as some noses.
I have seen some anime girls getting nosebleeds, although most of the time it is from seeing another girl’s panties. Occasionally, it’s because of a guy, but not as often.
It’s a wonder any of them survive losing that much blood. At the very least, they should pass-out and slip into a coma…
I do remember it actually being a plot point in One Piece. Sanji lost so much blood that they needed a transfusion and because they were on Fishman Island they were having a hard time finding a doner.
