Citrus (Volume 2) – Love Me Do!

What happened?

Yuzu is worried that she overdid it when she told Mei off for starting everything by kissing her. She even stayed at Harumi’s house last night, afraid to go home and face Mei, and she’s thinking about doing the same again tonight. That’s when Himeko enters the classroom and demands to speak with Yuzu. She wants to know what’s going on with her and Mei. Yuzu reluctantly agrees to talk, but not here. Somewhere private where no one is listening.

Himeko agrees to meet with Yuzu on Saturday and pushes the issue. Yuzu isn’t sure how much Himeko knows and doesn’t want to give anything away that she doesn’t have to. Himeko reveals that she is Mei’s oldest friend and is just looking out for her. She also tells Yuzu to stay away from her, which right now, she’s happy to do. However, after leaving the cafe, they bump into Mei who asks Yuzu if she’s going to come home, stunning Himeko. Mei tells her that Yuzu is her sister now and that they live together.

Citrus Volume 2 Mei tells Yuzu to come home

Yuzu still can’t get Mei out of her mind and tries to spend some time alone with her by inviting her to visit her father with her. To get there they have to travel on a crowded train which just forces them to be close together. Yuzu almost loses control, but it’s clear that Mei is feeling something too. Eventually, they arrive at the cemetery. Mei reveals that she didn’t realise Yuzu’s father had died. She pays her respects and wishes that she could patch things up with her father.

Surprisingly, he returns from his travels and introduces himself to Yuzu. She then puts her foot in her mouth by praising Mei for all the work she’s been doing at the school to ensure his inheritance is well cared for. He storms out. Yuzu follows and learns that he doesn’t know what he wants to do with his life and has been travelling searching for himself. He’s set up schools all around the world, but he doesn’t want to go back to that one. Later on, he’s packed up and ready to leave again, but this time Yuzu forces Mei to come to the airport to see him off. She calls him father for the first time in ages and then returns home to finally open the letters he’s been sending her, making Yuzu cry for Mei.

What did you think?

We got to meet Mei’s father and I thought he was an interesting character. I can sympathise with his struggles to find his way in life, however, to abandon his daughter is not something that I’m all right with. At least, he had the decency to find a new loving mother for her, although I’ve no idea how they met since he’s always off travelling. It was interesting to see some similarities between him and Yuzu, which will no doubt confuse things for Mei.

That’s enough about Dad. This story is about Mei and Yuzu and this volume delivered. Until now there have been some superficial kisses that started everything off and got Yuzu all flustered. You could argue that Mei wasn’t fully committed and did it just to shut Yuzu up, but the last kiss felt like a real breakthrough. Yuzu was crying watching Mei finally read her father’s letters. When Mei wiped away her tears she was drawn in and they kissed, this time for real.

I think that was a great way to develop their relationship. Their reactions to it were amazing as you could see that both of them realised that it was different. The addition of Himeko doesn’t really rock the boat too much as she’s not really a part of a love triangle as she’s just an interested outside party, however, the girl that appears to be heading Yuzu’s way at the end of the volume is quite clearly meant to be trouble, stirring things up just as they get started. Ooo, the drama!
