Author Journey (May 16, 2022)

The Otaku Author Journey May 16 2022

I think I may have a problem. I’ve got several ongoing projects both in the blogging world and the writing world, but despite this, I can feel myself being pulled towards new shiny projects. I need to come up with some rules!

Hot Topic

There has been no news from Montreal, so I am going to put Rosario+Vampire on hold for now and revisit it at a later date when the manga is more readily available. I made the decision early last week and reserved another series from my library. Over the last couple of days, I’ve been watching them all moving from the various libraries in Ottawa and coming to mine. Today, I will pick up all eleven volumes of Sankarea: Undying Love.

I watched the anime back at the beginning of 2019 with Yomu from the Umai Yomu Anime Blog where we would watch a couple of episodes and then discuss them, posting our discussions. Since then, I rebranded and all of my old posts went offline. We enjoyed the series, but it wasn’t without its issues. It also didn’t have an ending, so hopefully, reading the manga will give me the closure that I crave. Anyhow, we’re also going to republish all of our old discussions. It’s going to be fun seeing if my views have changed.

What have I been watching/reading?

It’s been a while since I watched any Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood episodes as I had completed twenty-four prior to this year beginning. Now that we’re in quarter two, I figured I had better get back on that. I’m really enjoying the series, but it is a long one and that’s hard when there are so many other series that I want to jump into. Anyhow, I got through seven episodes and several episodes of Sankarea… Yeah, I know, I’m rewatching it too. I can’t help myself.

Anyhow, I’ve noticed I’m watching blocks of episodes now and I’m still enjoying really committing to a show. I also love watching a series in a week. It feels like long enough that I’m not just glued to a screen all day, but quick enough that it all stays fresh in my head. Waiting a week between episodes is too long for me. I can handle a day, but I also like being able to watch one more episode if I’m really getting drawn in.

Have you seen Peach Boy Riverside? I’d love to know if you watched it in the order it aired and whether it made any sense at all! I’m convinced that it was done as a gimmick that backfired. It’s a shame because it really is an enjoyable series if you watch it in the correct order.

They made us relive Maes Hughes’ death in the last episode and then Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood made us watch as Maria Ross was framed for his murder. Sadly, it wasn’t done there…

This volume of Magical Girl Apocalypse was incredible. The apocalypse was over and everything reverted to normal, except that Kii, Kaede, and several others remembered everything! What is going on?

Work in Progress

It was another busy week at work which had taken up a lot of my time. Annoyingly, it’s been busy in sporadic bursts so I’ve not been able to plan my time as well as I’d like. A lot of what I do is dependent on others doing something else first, so I’ll get very little notice that things are ready and I have to absorb any delays so that I can get the completed reports out on time. Boring!

So, I ended up dropping A Plague of Giants by Kevin Hearne. It just wasn’t doing anything for me and I ended up zoning out which is never a good sign. Luckily, the next audiobook in the Witcher series became available so I’m almost three hours into that one. It hasn’t started as well as The Last Wish, but I’ll stick with this one.

The strangest thing happened while I was not listening to A Plague of Giants – I started to think about a book I wrote back when I was living in New Zealand. It was a time travel murder mystery set in a small town in England. Bizarrely, an image from that book popped into my head and did its best to grab my attention. I’ve always believed that it had a strong story and just needed a lot of polish. Well, I think I’m ready to try. It’s yet another project to add to my list of projects which is insane, but the way my writer’s block is going, I’ve got to jump at anything that demands my attention.

The Plan

So, new projects… Of course, that happened here too with Sankarea: Undying Love. Fitting Sankarea into my schedule forced me to push back two posts that I had already scheduled. They are now in quarter one of 2023. That’s right, I have posts scheduled for next year already, despite having other series not finished yet.

Admittedly, I should absolutely finish the series that I haven’t completed yet and maybe I’ll make that a rule at some point, but I’ll also tend to look at standard length series going forward. Completing Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood will be an incredible achievement and I’ll have written roughly fifty thousand words on the show once I’m done. However, I could have completed four different series in that time though. It’s always going to be a tough decision.

    • First Draft – 0/?

So, yeah. I added my time travel murder mystery even though I haven’t yet found the first draft. It’s going to be on one of my hard drives so I’ll update that as soon as I have it. The first step will be to reread it and plot it out. This story has four POV characters so that alone should keep it interesting.

Final Thoughts

It would appear that I am able to invent new projects as quickly as I’m able to work on them and that should be a problem. However, the way I’m choosing to look at it is that I need to have things to do. If I’m not actively working towards an endpoint, I would no doubt lose my mind. And with the writing, I’m just trying to give myself as many opportunities to get back into it as possible.

Anyhow, thanks for reading.

  1. Congrats on making a plan to manage your projects! You are a lot more organized than I am. I have watched some of Peachboy Riverside. Unfortunately I watched it as it was aired, I became very frustrated with it, and dropped it about half way through. I vowed that I would return to watch the whole series after it was done airing and watch it in the correct order, but I haven’t actually done that yet.

    • Thanks. From what I’ve seen in the comments, that seems to be a common occurrence. Such a weird thing to do. It’s not like it was specially adapted to air in a different order. They just jumbled them up. It’s worth watching in the correct order.
