Overflow (Season One)

Kazushi has known Ayane and Kotone all of his life. Now that he’s at college, he’s starting to look at them a little differently. How will he choose between these two incredible girls? Maybe, he won’t have to!
Overflow (Season One)
What did you watch?
Back when Ecchi Hunter was up and running, I would scan the seasonal anime looking for ecchi shows to review. Sometimes, they don’t even have the ecchi tag, but I was getting good at spotting a show with fan service just from the title image. So, I would go through adding shows to my watch list. Then, sometime later I was scanning the list and spotted Overflow. It was only eight episodes long and each episode was only six minutes. Sounded like an easy win. Little did I know, it was actually a hentai series… Oh, well. I’d already committed, so in I went. Don’t worry, however, this post will be free of nudity, the episode posts contain some, but nothing more than I would consider ecchi. Anyhow, the bath is getting cold… let’s jump in…

What happened?
Kazushi came home from his part-time job to find Ayane and Kotone waiting for him. They were expecting him to bring home puddings, but he didn’t see their message. Rather than sit through another lecture, he ran off to the bathroom and found a tub of hot water waiting for him. He jumped in and allowed the soothing bath soap to relax him. Seconds later, Ayane and Kotone barged in. Apparently, Ayane had made the bath for her and used some expensive salts. Kazushi said they could get in with him. There was plenty of room!
He never expected them to call his bluff, however, both had bikinis on under their clothes. Kotone was the first to get in. Ayane washed in the shower first. Kotone slipped and fell onto Kazushi who was completely naked. He tried to compose himself, but it was hard… Ayane got in moments later and then jumped out again, saying it was too cramped with three of them. As soon as she left the room, Kazushi and Kotone took their friendship to another level. They were interrupted not long after they had finished which meant Kazushi never got a chance to talk to Kotone about what they had done.
Once the girls were asleep, he rolled over to Kotone and tried to discuss what happened. However, in the darkness, he accidentally rolled into Ayane and it was too late to claim it was an accident. Things were about to get complicated.

What did you think?
My only previous experience with hentai was a series called Guy: Double Target that was released in the UK with all the sex cut out, making it a pretty standard horror series. I had no idea it was even a hentai until the other year when I tried to track it down. Anyhow, this is not like Guy: Double Target. In fact, I would say this is much closer to Why the hell are you here, Teacher!? but with actual sex. Anyhow, I actually enjoyed the series. It actually had a storyline that made sense. Now, I don’t think I’ll be quick to review another series, but I wouldn’t rule it out, especially if it’s like this one.

What was your favourite moment?
It has to be the episode where Ayane came to Kazushi’s apartment to make lunches so they could all go out for the day. He woke to find her in his kitchen wearing nothing but an apron… That was fantastic. I love High School of the Dead and Saeko Busujima in particular, so I’m quite fond of the apron look. Of course, Ayane took it to the next level, which was appreciated.

What was your least favourite moment?
There wasn’t anything that particularly upset me which was a pleasant surprise. In the beginning, I found Kazushi to be a little forceful with his advances, but they really weren’t anything to worry about. I did find it a little odd that Ayane and Kotone never mentioned what was happening. However, I can understand that they might worry about the other getting upset. I could start picking holes in the plot, but what’s the fun in that?

Who was your favourite character?
There are only three characters to choose from in this series which makes this fairly easy. Ayane wins and not just because of the apron, although that was a big factor. I liked both girls and found their actions to be believable which makes the entire story work. She also did the apron thing…

Who was your least favourite character?
It has to be Kazushi, but only because he’s not Kotone. Kotone came a close second which means in a three-horse race, third place is last. Kazushi didn’t even do anything wrong, but someone has to lose. To be fair though, he did more than enough winning over the eight episodes, he can afford to take a defeat here.

Would you like some more?
So, the season ended without Ayane or Kotone learning that they were both sleeping with Kazushi. That leaves it open for another season if you ask me and while I said, I wouldn’t run out and review another hentai, if there was a second season of Overflow, I would absolutely watch it and maybe review it. It was surprisingly enjoyable and not remotely cringe. That said, watch it alone or with someone that knows what they are getting into.

What have you learnt?
The addition of sex doesn’t have to come at the expense of the story. This series would have worked without the sex scenes. Implied scenes with a fade to black would have been fine. That said, I’m not advocating the removal of sex scenes. In fact, if the story calls for it, they should absolutely be there. The level of detail can be decided on a case-by-case basis. There are plenty of different categories to allow the audience to decide what they want. I don’t think it’s for anyone else to dictate.
