Author Journey (August 1, 2022)

The Otaku Author Journey August 1 2022

It’s not uncommon to think that your writing stinks. All authors go through it and it can be hard to realise that it might not be your writing. It could be a skunk, waiting on your doorstep when you come home from walking the dog!

Hot Topic

And no, that was not a metaphor… Last Saturday night, I took Gus on his usual pre-bed walk. It takes us thirty to forty-five minutes in which we wander the neighbourhood. He sniffs the grass and tries to catch the rabbits. I listen to an audiobook or a podcast. During this particular walk, I was listening to The Gunslinger by Stephen King. Gus saw some rabbits and a couple of raccoons, but it was pretty uneventful… until we got home.

I was about to drop a bag in the trash can when Gus started barking at the side door. We usually enter through the side door as it’s closest to Gus’ bed. I had a bad feeling about this so I ran out of the carport and Gus followed, no questions asked. Once we were far enough away, I turned on the flashlight on my phone and saw a skunk scamper out of the carport. Amazingly, it didn’t spray us, but the carport was not so lucky. I’m writing this after sloshing vinegar all over the outside of my house like a crazy person in the middle of the night!

What have I been watching/reading?

I finished a series which is the first full series of posts for 2023 and then started watching another. Admittedly, it does feel a little crazy preparing posts for next year, but that’s where I am now – planning posts and sloshing vinegar… Anyhow, I also started another series, however, this one I will not be reviewing episodically. Part of the reason that I stopped doing seasonal was that I kept picking shows that looked good, but failed to deliver. It was frustrating.

So, I decided to pick older shows that I could binge. Also, by working ahead, my schedule is more relaxed and if a show doesn’t grab me and make me want to talk about it, I don’t. If that takes one or three episodes for me to realise, it doesn’t matter. When I start posting about a series, I cannot make myself walk away. I have to complete it. If I haven’t started posting about it, it’s easy to wash my hands of it. Now, this series wasn’t bad, but it didn’t grab me. I may yet watch all of it and do a season review only, but I don’t feel like I have to, which is nice!

Anyhow, here’s a quick look at what I posted last week.

I have finished my series of posts looking at Peach Boy Riverside. Despite the constant annoyance at the release schedule, I really enjoyed the actual series. It had some fun characters and exciting moments. I would say it’s worth checking out.

There were some big developments in Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood. It’s starting to get really interesting. It’s been good from the beginning, but I like where it’s going even more.

We looked at a curious episode of Fire Force season two. Ironically, it was the villains that saved the day and while I think they are kind of interesting in their own right, it was a bit of a letdown from the heroes.

I’ve also finished my Magical Girl Apocalypse posts and pulled it all together in a series review. This is one series that I would love to see turned into an anime. Of course, it’ll need to be about four seasons long… which would be amazing!

That means I have two new sets of posts starting this week, replacing Peach Boy Riverside and Magical Girl Apocalypse. I think both will be quite surprising, especially as one isn’t an anime or a manga.

Don’t forget that I am also doing several ecchi shows which are a little more risque. They don’t appear in the feed so you have to go looking for them.

Work in Progress

It wasn’t the best week for writing. On top of the skunk incident, I had internet outages, extra pressure from the day job, real-life family events, and other things that all stopped me from getting as many words down as I would have liked. Sadly, I only added a single chapter that came in at 894 words. It looks like I’m slowly going backwards, which is why I’m going to attempt to break my days down even more.

I tend to try to get a chapter done in one sitting, but I rarely have a block of time that would work. So, if I can write a couple of paragraphs here and there it will all add up. One of my concerns is that it will take me longer, but that is obviously nonsense, since the more words I do the faster I’ll write it. I’ve definitely got some things to work out with my habits and some minor rewiring in the way I think about things.

The Plan

For the most part, I’ve been working on my 2023 posts. Of course, I still have some to finish for this year, including the Sankarea manga series. Originally, I had put it off after reading two volumes and realising that it covered most of the anime and I wanted to finish my rewatch before continuing. Well, it’s been a month and I’ve not done anything there either. Luckily, I have some focused time coming up that will be perfect for just that sort of thing.

Basically, my plan is for ten posts a week in 2023. So, as long as I write more than ten posts a week, I will chip away at the future workload, which is pretty much what I’ve been doing for a while now and is how I almost wrote a year’s worth of posts in six months. It’s all a game of numbers which is where my analytical skills come in from the day job. Maybe, I need to build some charts…

I’m continuing to chip away at my targets and it’s a big boost seeing the calendar filling up. I just need to keep it up and I need to pick a different series to put in the spot that I had planned for the one I dropped.

As I said last week, progress is progress. Obviously, I want to write more. I have a massive backlog of ideas that desperately want to become full stories so I need to increase my word count. That’s all there is to it at this stage. Write more!

Final Thoughts

I’ve certainly had my issues with self-doubt and thinking my writing stinks, which is why I listen to audiobooks regularly too. I drop a lot of audiobooks. If it doesn’t grab me in the first chapter, I walk away. I don’t have twenty hours to kill listening to something I don’t like. However, someone out there will like it. The fact that it was made into an audiobook testifies to that. So, I guess the point is to stop worrying about whether you stink or not. There will be someone that your book touches, so write it!

Anyhow, thanks for reading.

  1. Dealing with doubt is tough. It’s almost as hard as marketing. Nah, I’m kidding. It’s even harder than marketing. Which just emphasizes how much it sucks.

I hope you can find enough time to write more than a few paragraphs in one sitting. I’d lose the thread of my story if I had to do that. Lots of my days are like that, but that’s why I still write anime reviews. They’re not very big, and even if I get interrupted a couple dozen times, it’s no big deal to reacquire the threads. With a novel, though, I’ve had times when I made a big reveal twice a couple of chapters apart. Whoops.

But like you said: progress is progress. Glad you’re moving forward!

    • Yeah, it’s one of those things that just seems to sneak up on you. One day, I’ll be as confident as anyone and the next, I’ll be second guessing everything.

I hope so too. I’ve done that while editing. A great idea will come to me and I’ll edit it into the sentence I’m working on and then I read on and discover I already did that and better the first time around.

I do have a week coming up where it’ll be just me and Gus at home so I’m planning on putting some serious effort in. I’m quite excited.
