Author Journey (August 22, 2022)

The Otaku Author Journey August 22 2022

After the previous week’s frustrating set of circumstances, I decided to set myself no goals or expectations. I didn’t end up writing, but it felt good to catch up on some other things.

Hot Topic

This week was calmer and it felt nice. I didn’t plan on doing any writing and I didn’t. After so many weeks of failed starts and constant interruptions, I needed some time to just not try. It was good and it allowed me to focus on something I’ve been putting off for quite some time. There were some external pressures on this one which seemed to make me dive in head first.

On Monday, I received an email from my library telling me that I needed to return the copies of Sankarea: Undying Love that I had borrowed. That’s fair enough, I’ve had them for a while, however, there wasn’t anyone waiting for them. They gave me until Thursday. I had nine volumes to read and review. I finished on Friday. Luckily, they won’t charge me any late fees, but if they did, it wouldn’t be the end of the world. It’s cheaper than buying them and libraries deserve every penny they get, and probably more.

What have I been watching/reading?

With my focus on getting through the whole of Sankarea, that was pretty much all I did. I watched one episode of anime which was episode one of a series I’m looking to review in the New Year. I enjoyed it and will definitely be continuing. This looks like it’s going to be a fun one and I’m excited to get into it.

So, yeah. Sankarea. I read nine volumes over five days which isn’t that much, however, writing the reviews takes time, almost as long as it takes me to read them. The day job didn’t get in the way too much and there were still interruptions from the kids, but it was generally calmer, which is something I am looking to build on. I need deadlines and targets, but I also don’t like too many surprises.

Anyhow, here’s a quick look at what I posted last week.

Brunhilde continues to be the star of Record of Ragnarok which is surprising as she’s not even the one fighting. This fight needs to end so we can get on with the next one already.

This week saw my second analysis of My Dress-Up Darling where I looked at episodes 5 to 8 and dived into what Gojou was up to and how Marin has changed his life.

A character that has been teased several times so far finally comes into play and he is as unhinged as he appeared. Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood continues to be amazing.

Season two of Fire Force takes us back to the Nether which delivered several outstanding fights in season one. I just hope it can live up to expectations.

As a lifelong fan of the original series, I’m a little disappointed in Masters of the Universe: Revelation so far. There’s a lot of potential, but I don’t think it’s really made the most of it.

And you’ll find all the episode reviews for My Dress-Up Darling and more in my ecchi line of posts! They are most definitely not safe for work!

Work in Progress

It might seem weird taking a break from something that you really weren’t doing much of, but it was the pressure of trying to do it that seemed to have piled up on my back. I’m hoping that by giving myself a week where I didn’t even think about it, I would come back renewed and ready to go. I think it did work. At least I hope so.

In other news, I took a quick trip to the book store and wandered around the light novel and manga section. Seeing all these books that have been running for years and years is incredibly inspiring. It’s not just the super popular series either. I was amazed to see that they had volume 18 of Grimgar. Now, I loved the anime and feel like I really need to get into the books. Another shocker was that Triage X has 22 volumes. It gives me a lot of hope for the long series I have in the works.

The Plan

The big news was that I finished reviewing Sankarea: Undying Love. I do have one character piece and the manga wrap-up post to do, but I have no more episodes to watch or manga to read for 2022. I am now three posts away from completing this year. It’s a little later than I had hoped, but it’s still a crazy feat to have achieved before the end of August.

I’m very happy with what I achieved this week and can now move on with nothing hanging over me.

I did read more of my old first draft of Valiant Lineage and I think that will be where my main focus will lie for the next while.

Final Thoughts

I definitely needed a chilled week and was lucky enough to finally get one. I even went away to Montreal for a night on the weekend. I don’t know if it comes across, but my zen has not been where I would like it to be for a little while now. Taking seasonal anime off my list has helped and allowed me to plough ahead which has also taken off some of the pressure. Now, I just need to get a couple more things to go the way I’d like. What do you do to foster a calm environment?

Anyhow, thanks for reading.
