Author Journey (July 25, 2022)

The Otaku Author Journey July 25 2022

After a stressful week at work, I decided that it was the right time to kick back and relax. Of course, by kick back I mean write more and by relax I also mean write more. I may have a problem switching off!

Hot Topic

This was a busy week. My regular reporting period at the day job should have been over the week before, but various issues all conspired to drag it into last week. Then, they dithered back and forth while I desperately tried to get everything out as soon as possible while answering numerous questions as to when the reports will be available. I hate being at the end of the chain. Everyone else’s delays impact me the most.

So, that sucked the life out of me. I did manage to write a couple more chapters of my novel which felt good, although it was less than the week before. However, I did manage to finish a project that I’ve been working on most of the year and have been putting off for so long it’s embarrassing. That’s right, I finally finished watching Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood.

What have I been watching/reading?

I had nine episodes of Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood left and I blew through them all. It’s taken me a while to get through, but mostly because I’ve been trying to watch it and so many other shows at the same time. I found I tended to watch it in chunks of twelve, although for the last twenty four I really went for it.

I mentioned the other week that I had started another show and had been slowed down because I decided to watch it dubbed and the dubbed version hadn’t finished airing. So, I’ve put that on hold until I can watch the last four episodes back to back. That meant that I had a little time to start yet another series, although the posts won’t go up until the New Year.

Anyhow, here’s a quick look at what I posted last week.

Last week saw my review of the last episode of Peach Boy Riverside go live. I really enjoyed this series, however, I can’t imagine I would have felt the same if I had been watching it as it aired. Yet, another win for the full-season binge.

This episode of Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood might just be my favourite recap episode yet. Some new stuff was revealed, but it was definitely a recap and it was masterfully done.

I was pleased to see more of my girl, Arrow in last week’s Fire Force season two post. She’s not had nearly enough screentime which may lead me to come up with a spinoff idea. I haven’t done one of those in a while. Not sure what I’m referring to, check out my old Saturday Spinoff posts.

I’ve been so focused on anime on this blog that it felt really good covering a manga that has no anime to this date. Magical Girl Apocalypse is a fantastic series and this is the climax it deserved. Keep an eye out for this week’s post where I put together my thoughts on the series as a whole.

I’ve been so completely engrossed in My Dress-Up Darling that I put together a post where I talk about Marin and her impact on those around her. It’s the first of three bonus posts that I’ve written to accompany my episode reviews.

Talking about the episode reviews, I also have reviews for Seven Mortal Sins and My Wife is the Student Council President, just in case you want something a little more spicy!

Work in Progress

I managed to write a further 2.2 thousand words to my new first draft of Out of Time. That’s now a total of 6.5 thousand words which is six chapters. I’m happy with how it’s going so far and the makeshift outline I put together last week has already seen some changes. I also have the third point of view character’s chapters to start, but I’m planning on writing those once I’ve got to the end as they will weave the narrative together.

I shouldn’t have a crazy schedule at work this week so that will take some pressure off and allow me to get back to increasing my word count. Last week wasn’t how I had hoped it would go, but to get any words in with the way things went is a win. I’ve got a lot of sidelined projects and ideas that are just itching to get out of my head so I need to keep going.

The Plan

One thing I learnt through the pandemic was that I need my daily release to keep my head clear. For me, that’s watching anime. Even when I was working until four in the morning, I made sure I watched something to help me relax. Without that, I would have definitely lost my mind. So, I’ve been looking at how that would impact my schedule.

At the moment, I’m posting six reviews a week plus an Author Journey. My average rate of watching anime is ten episodes a week, give or take a couple. This explains how I’ve been able to get so far ahead of myself with my schedule. So, I’m looking at adjusting things in the New Year so that I’ll be posting nine reviews a week. I’m going to see how things go over the remainder of the year. I’ve got lots of time to play with this.

As you can see, I’ve added in some of my schedule for 2023. I’ve changed some of the terminologies since I’m doing more than just anime now. Regular morning releases are Posts and what used to be Ecchi are now referred to as Pages. I’m not scheduling any bonus posts. They may still happen, I’m just not planning on them happening.

Progress is progress. I’m happy with the number of words I’m producing in a session as I am currently sitting down to write a chapter and find myself getting through it fast enough. I’m also not experiencing any blocks when I do start. I just need to schedule more time into my week now.

Final Thoughts

One of the reasons that I track my numbers daily is because it allows me to see how my week works. I can see that I’m watching more anime than I can review in a week and that is spilling into the future. As a result, I can adjust my schedule to fit what works for my mental health. It’s important that we have a way to release our pent-up energy and everyone will have different ways of doing so. This works for me. I have to keep busy, keep moving forward. It’s just the way my brain works.

Anyhow, thanks for reading.

  1. A problem switching off, huh? That sounds familiar!

I’ve been enjoying your reviews of My Dress Up Darling. It’s one of those shows that gives me hope for humanity’s future. I know that’s a lot to pin on an ecchi comedy, but it’s more than up to the task.

I might rewatch Fire Force. I missed Arrow. And Maki, too.

Congratulations on more forward motion on Out of Time! I hope your momentum builds on itself.

    • Thanks, My Dress-Up Darling is practically a perfect show. There are so many lessons to take away from it, I think I could watch it every month and not get bored.

Maki is the indisputable number one girl in Fire Force so it’s always good to spend more time with her, although season three has been given the green light. More is coming.

Thanks again. I think my first week writing was probably a lot more than I was expecting so a little dip in week two was to be expected. Momentum is great, but it’s also the reason I’m reluctant to take any real time off…
