Author Journey (May 23, 2022)

The Otaku Author Journey May 23 2022

Last week was all about tidying things up so that I can take some time off. That’s right, as you read this, I’m on vacation. I have no plans to do any work and that’s going to be a weird feeling!

Hot Topic

So, yeah! I’m on vacation and I mean a real vacation. I’m not just sitting around the house or doing chores in the garden. It’s a real bonified holiday and it’s been so long that I don’t even remember what those were like. I’ll give you more details next Monday when I will back at work, but there is definitely a mouse involved.

Last Monday, I picked up all eleven volumes of the Sankarea: Undying Love manga and am still in awe of my library. The fact that I was able to put a hold on them the week before and all eleven were available and moved to my local library for me to pick up is amazing. I am gutted that I’ve had to put Rosario+Vampire on hold, but there is word that new print runs of books are starting to appear again. Happy times.

What have I been watching/reading?

I spent the week watching more Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood in my attempt to get all of my posts for quarter three completed. And would you believe it, I did it. I’m now up to episode 37 of FMAB and it’s getting really good. I’m so glad I decided to cover this series as there’s a lot to learn from it.

I also got back to work on the series that will follow Peach Boy Riverside. I mentioned before that I had originally planned on doing a different series in its place, but when I watched Peach Boy Riverside, I knew that I needed to talk about that one first. I’m not going to say which series it is yet, but it’s not a recent one, that’s for sure.

This was a great episode of Peach Boy Riverside? There were some great fights, some good banter, and one hell of a twist.

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood took us beyond Amestris and showed us the ancient lost civilisation of Xerxes. Spooky and amazing. So much potential.

Magical Girl Apocalypse continues in the alternate timeline where the apocalypse didn’t happen, but that doesn’t mean it’s over. Far from it!

I’ve mentioned a few times that I am also covering a number of ecchi titles but releasing them as pages so that they don’t appear in my RSS feed. I’d rather those that want to see them find them the old-fashioned way rather than forcing them into someone’s feeds as I appreciate they’re not for everyone. If you do want to check them out here are the series links.

Work in Progress

Officially, my vacation started on Thursday which meant that I had a short week. With my commitments to my day job, I didn’t have any time to even think about my writing. I scheduled my vacation outside of the usual reporting periods, however, that also meant that I had to make sure everything was out on time. Thankfully, everything went to plan this month and there were no mad rushes at the eleventh hour.

I’m not planning on doing anything this week, although I did do a rough plot of a novel on a plane once. Will I be able to do that with two excited children? Probably not, but never say never. Anyhow, my goal for last week was just to get everything to tied up and ready for the vacation. It’s going to feel odd going to sleep at a normal time, but it’s probably something I need to work towards.

Of course, I will have my phone on me and I may do a little plotting late at night as I try to fall asleep. That’s always when my mind is most active. My body is trying to wind down, but not my brain.

The Plan

As I mentioned earlier, I turned my attention to Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood and have really been getting into the series of late. I did have a break after getting to episode twenty-four, but I think I will try to power through to the end now. I’m at episode forty so another twenty-four episodes should take two to three weeks. After that, I will have posts scheduled all the way into April 2023…

There’s always more to do, but finishing this series will be quite the achievement. I’m also really enjoying it and just want to find out how it ends. I have other shows lined up as well and I’d love to get on with those too. Not to mention the writing…

I honestly wish I had more time to be able to look at even more anime and manga. There are so many that I want to look at and that list seems to grow faster than I can knock them off.

No writing last week and I doubt there will be any writing this week. My goal right now is to enjoy my vacation, come back refreshed, and then hit it hard. There’s still plenty of time in the year to catch up, but it is slipping away.

Final Thoughts

The last couple of years have been hard on everyone and it’s still not exactly over. Try to stay safe, but don’t let it take over your lives. Surprisingly, there’s more to life than sitting in the basement watching anime… I know, I was just as surprised, but it’s also important to go outside and do things. Just don’t take too many risks.

Anyhow, stay safe and thanks for reading.

  1. Yay, happy vacation! I hope you have lots of fun! Wow, you are so organized for someone about to go on vacation! When I travel I usually open my suitcase at my destination to find that I forgot half of the stuff I was supposed to take and I’m constantly getting calls from work because I’ve prepared nothing for my absence!

    • Thanks. It’s off to a good start. Most of my jobs have been very dependant on routines and schedules so it’s kind of become second nature. I think that helps me be organized with the blog too.

  2. I hope your vacation goes well. I noticed in your previous posts you mentioned being busy at work – this summer should be of a lighter load though, hopefully that is the case. If you don’t mind me asking what do you do for a living? Me, I make computer software systems 🤗

    • I’m hoping for a quieter summer, which may be the case with help coming to stay with us. Sadly, the day job is pretty continuous. I work in Business Intelligence and data analytics, specializing in optimization. I generally have a lot of monthly reports to put together that take up half my month at least. Whatever is left over is for development and updates, which is quieter. Lately the reporting has been taking three weeks leaving little time for the rest of my work. I’ve also had a number of family situations that have impacted my work time and that knocks into my personal “work” time. If it all settee down, I should have enough time for everything. It’s just been a juggling act for most of the year so far.

    • Oh wow that’s rough. Good to hear you’re getting some help coming over though. I know some folks in business and it is a very fast-paced role, though it also seems frustrating when it offers little to no breathing room to focus on yourself. I had that same predicament last spring, being close to a product release and having bug fixes thrown left and right, on top of a very stubborn device that seemed to have a mind of its own at the worst time… 😖

But the reason why I think summer will be lighter is because folks are gonna be on vacation, which usually means less work and all. Maybe that might be the case now, at least on my end everyone’s taking breaks now that everything’s open without restrictions. I suppose it might be the same for you too?

    • Yeah, it’s pretty relentless. Unfortunately with the nature of things vacations don’t have that much impact as the reporting cycle keeps on churning. Just having a little more help at home will make a big difference though. Have my parents and my wife’s mom coming to stay at different times so that’ll be nice.

    • That’s not too swell, but I guess that’s the work’s nature lending to that. But on the flip side, always good to have the family staying over – hope you can enjoy the time with them! 🤗

    • Yeah. It is what it is. If everything calms down, I should have more time to do my own thing. And thanks. It feels weird being able to travel again and will be nice having family around again.

    • I’m confident things will wind down, usually it happens in my experience that it gets a lot less difficult or time consuming near the end of the fiscal year’s quarters. And definitely! You will find the time with family will be great rest from work and provide plenty of recreational activity to take in, so make the most of them 👍

  3. Enjoy your vacation! Hopefully it is for you the breath of fresh air everyone’s needing lately.

These Author Journey posts are really interesting to read. Good thing there seem to be new prints of the Rosario+Vampire, it’s a real bummer missing only one vol. Meanwhile I wonder what the mysterious anime you’ve been mentioning could be…

    • Thanks. So far so good.

And thanks again. I started these as a way to keep myself accountable but they’ve morphed into a behind the scenes account. They’ve been helpful in keeping my mind focused on what I’m doing and it’s a fun journal that I can look back at.

Hopefully the reveal will be exciting. I’m trying to mix up the shows I cover.
