How Heavy Are the Dumbbells You Lift? (Episode 12) – How Heavy Are the Barbells You Lift?
What happened?
Another day at Silverman’s Gym and there’s a poster for a muscle man pageant on Nikunoshima island. Machio is packed and ready to go. Zina and Uehara have already signed up as have Uehara’s sister, Saotomi, Aina, and Kure. It’s just Hibiki and Akemi who haven’t yet committed and both appear to have plans, but then the thought of muscular bodies, hot guys, and sandy beaches convince them to change their minds.
It’s almost time for the Mr Nikunoshima contest and the older girls are busy toasting the day away, but unfortunately, there aren’t enough contestants so the contest is cancelled. Up next is the Miss Nikunoshima contest and all of the girls decide to enter. For the talent section, Zina is going to do some Cossack Dancing but then the girl before her does the same. Uehara is going to complete a set of dragon wings, but her swimsuit is too lewd and she is disqualified. Akemi gets onto the stage and does a set of handstand push-ups… The final contestant is Hibiki and she’s ready to knock out the competition!

What did you think?
Firstly, I loved this series. It has made a real impression on me and I don’t think I’m the only one. This episode managed to combine a swimsuit episode, a tournament episode, and a heartfelt farewell episode into one. All while maintaining the exercise tips and positive attitude that has permeated the series. I feel like the ending to the tournament was the perfect way to end things and then the discussion between Hibiki and Akemi on the beach topped it off.
For a series that was focused on bodybuilding and fitness, it has really surprised me with how great it made me feel. Machio is a champion of epic proportions and highlights the effects a positive and nonjudgemental attitude can have on not just you but the people around you. I would love a second season or maybe an exercise video, even an interactive workout game would be incredible. There’s so much potential to take things further with this series and I hope they do. It definitely warrants a rewatch or two.
