SHIMONETA: A Boring World Where the Concept of Dirty Jokes Doesn’t Exist (Episode 2) – The Mysteries of Pregnancy

Tanukichi’s first mission for SOX went well, although there was some room for improvements. Anyhow, there’s no point sitting back, not when a new law is being presented that would enhance the laws regarding public morals.

What happened?
Ayame was delighted to have been able to show the entire school the video of two flies mating. She’s sure that it would have opened a few minds, and maybe more. However, she still can’t understand why Tanukichi drew the sign for a nuclear power station on the school playing field instead of the symbol for a vagina like she had told him to. It did seem to work in their favour though as it left Anna and Gouriki even more confused.

At the next student council meeting, Tanukichi discovered that Gouriki had been purposely following him because of who his father is. Tanukichi promised them that he was nothing like his father and then explained how he had been abandoned by everyone when he was a child, and it was only when he met Anna that his life began to turn around. Sadly, she didn’t remember him, but was pleased to hear that she inspired him. Ayame seemed to enjoy this performance, especially as she had already come up with their next stunt.

Physical media that was deemed offensive had been the first thing to be destroyed, which meant that finding some was incredibly rare. Luckily, Ayame had a map that would lead them to a secret stash. She needed Tanukichi to collect it and bring it back so that they could hide them around the school. As they did so, Tanukichi ran into Hyouka who had recognised her flies from the video. That left her with even more questions about where babies came from. Luckily, Ayame had another plan up her sleeve that would reveal once and for all the answer to that very question!

What did you think?
I love this series. The humour is on point, especially the foul language and constant barrage of innuendos. I also love how it shows that the students have become completely clueless about most things since they have been sheltered their entire lives. To prove that point, Anna had found a picture that had been hidden around the school and decided to frame it in the student council office. It showed a girl holding a mushroom between her cleavage as she attempted to lick it… Tanukichi was instantly distracted by it, which caused Anna to wonder what he had seen. Luckily, he didn’t have to completely explain what it was depicting, although Anna still has no idea!

In this episode, Ayame revealed that Anna’s parents were the ones behind the original public morals and decency act, and that they weren’t done. A new update was due to be presented to the government which would allow them to monitor everything anyone said at all times, and much more. If things were resembling 1984 previously, they were about to go all in on the idea. And, sadly, this is the reality of censorship. Once the ball starts rolling, it’s very hard to stop. The most frustrating thing is that it falls to someone else to decided what is acceptable and what is not. I grew up in England where all movie releases were delayed so that they could be screened and edited to allow them to be shown there.

Then, before you know it, we have generations of emotionally unstable teenagers who don’t understand what is happening to their bodies. I’m sure we’ve all heard stories about girls panicking about their first period, some even believing that they were dying because no one educated them about a completely natural part of life. Bizarrely, and this points to the difference in views, the UK would censor violence heavily where as the USA censors nudity. I’m sure every country and culture has things that they would deem offensive while others would see as perfectly normal. Anyhow, this episode was excellent and we got to see just how dangerous Anna could be if she were to snap… and snap, she will!
