Arifureta: From Commonplace to World’s Strongest (Episode 19) – Someone Important

Hajime and Kaori continue to explore the labyrinth and come across another illusion that shows the king slaughtering his guests to put an end to the peace between humans, beastfolk, and demons.
Arifureta: From Commonplace to World’s Strongest (Episode 19) – Someone Important
What happened?
Hajime explained to Kaori that she had a choice to make. She could stay knowing that Yue would always be special to him or if she couldn’t handle that, she should leave. He would even take her back if needed. She had a lot to think about. Regardless, they pushed on and found themselves in another illusion. This one showed them a party celebrating one year of peace between humans, beastfolk, and demons. Everyone seemed happy, but then the king ordered their deaths.
Kaori and Hajime could only watch as everyone was slaughtered. Of course, it was an illusion so they weren’t in any danger, but that didn’t make it any less disturbing. Hajime spotted a woman with a black hood accompanying the king and thought it was odd. They continued into the old ship and were then split up. When Hajime found Kaori she had been occupied by some sort of monster that was controlling her body. He threatened to take his time slowly killing the monster until it left of its own will. It didn’t stay long. Kaori was delighted to hear him defend her so she kissed him. That was her answer, she was going to stay.

What did you think?
This was actually a pretty good episode. It was nice to get some more context of things that are going on here, even if it wasn’t conclusive. The hooded woman with the king was obviously somehow connected to the nun that kidnapped their Sensei in the last episode and the reason for the king’s sudden change of heart. I had to laugh when Hajime commented that this labyrinth seemed too easy… unlike the other ones… Stop trolling us.
Then, once they got to the end, things got a little crazy. Kaori and Yue had a bit of coming together of views and appeared to accept each other as a part of Hajime’s life. It was very odd. Then, the monster they couldn’t defeat earlier reappeared and was ready to devour them when a school of fish slammed into it. They were being controlled by Leh-san. He was the fish monster that Hajime freed from an aquarium back in season one. It was all completely ridiculous, but I think we’ve come to accept that with this series.

What have you learnt?
It would appear that the god that rules this world is keen to see an eternal war between the races and has decided to see what Hajime does. To do that, it has made Hajime an enemy of humanity by declaring him a heretic. That’s handy as the demons are already not too happy with him, although the beastfolk are probably firmly on his side. There is the danger that Hajime defeats all the labyrinths and acquires all the powers necessary to fight the god.
Overall, I think the story of Arifureta is fascinating and deserves a lot more than this series has been able to give. I’m going to be one of those people now and say that the light novel might be the best way to consume this story. I haven’t read it, but my gut is telling me that this problem with the anime overall is the conversion. I’m going to look into the light novel as I think the story deserves another chance.
