What happened?

Did Hajime help? Of course he did. As usual, Hajime plays the edgy not caring guy for about thirty seconds and then agrees to help. So, with Hajime on board, the Sensei and her students head back to the town to prepare to fight. Tio Klarus has come along for the ride… sorry, poor choice of words, and it determined to help in any way she can. Hajime sets up a wall and waits for battle. As the monsters come into view, he gives a speech to the townsfolk about the goddess of farming, Sensei and how he is her sword and shield.

Together with Yue, Shea, and Tio, Hajime unleashes a wave of destruction on the advancing monsters as they search for the cloaked person leading them. It isn’t long before they find him and drag him back to the wall, forcing all the monsters to scatter. Well, would you believe it, it’s the student that went missing a couple of episodes back and he has been tasked by a demon to kill Sensei because she’s doing too much good for the world. In one last attempt to kill Sensei, he is shot by Hajime and as he lies on the floor dying Hajime steps forwards and finishes him off.

What did you think?

This episode was fine. There were elements that I enjoyed and some that I didn’t but it was a far more positive experience than some episodes. The battle itself was entertaining and gave the group a chance to show off their power and also for Tio to show her worth, beyond being a masochist. It still feels like we’re rushing through things and I’m wondering if we’re ever going to see the rest of the class again. With only a couple of episodes left, who knows.

What was your favourite moment?

During the battle, Hajime and Shea rode into the depths of the monster army on the motorbike and began to take them on at close quarters. Hajime with a gun in each hand spun and danced around blowing away monster after monster. It reminded me of the gun haka from Equilibrium or Neo in the Matrix, so that was instantly cool and for me probably Hajime’s best moment in the entire series so far.

What was your least favourite moment?

All right, so there were a couple of things that bugged me. When we first saw the cloaked student leading the monsters, he made a comment about whether Hajime would be able to defeat them all, but this student went missing before Hajime showed up and seemed to be pretty surprised by him when he was severely beaten. Take out that one line at the beginning and the continuity issue is gone. Seems like a lazy mistake to make.

Then there was the wall that Hajime created with his power. Once that was finished, we saw the townsfolk building it up more. Again, what was the point? Surely, Hajime had just done that. At least the CGI wasn’t completely abhorrent in this episode. It wasn’t great, but a marked improvement all around.

Who was your favourite character?

It was actually Hajime, but not for his character or any sort of development… haha, character development… It was in large part because of his gun haka and the way he obliterated the entire monster army without really breaking a sweat. I also liked how he looked out for Sensei, taking away any blame she might put on herself for the other student’s death.

Arifureta From Commonplace to World's Strongest Episode 10 Yue Hajime Shea and Tio

Who was your least favourite character?

What has happened to Yue? Is she even in the show anymore or has she just become this flat character that follows Hajime around and doesn’t really do much. Sure, she helped in the fight with her magic, but otherwise, I’m not sure what she does. As a five-hundred-year-old vampire, you’d think she would have more to say about things. Character development has been a real flaw in this series, just look at Tio who is literally just a masochist and nothings else.

Would you like some more?

At the moment, I’m entering each episode with a sense of dread. Now, that might work in its favour as it has such a low bar to beat before I find myself pleasantly surprised. This episode is probably the perfect example of that. It was average at best and still managed to be one of the better episodes, but only as a stand-alone. How it fits into the overall story is yet to be seen, but other than the revelation that the demons want to get ride of Sensei, I don’t think we learnt much.
