Darwin’s Game (Episode 5) – Aquarium

Kaname managed to convince the player with the skull mask to join his little team, although it was the mention of another player that did it. Now, they’re sitting tight and waiting for Shuka to join them, but she’s taking too long!
What happened?
The player with the skull mask who goes by the name Ryuji in the game was reluctant to join, especially as the Florist was involved and had recently taken over his body, but as soon as he discovered that the Eighth was likely to attack the hotel he instantly changed his mind. Together, they went over the rules and noted some unusual terminology making them think that collecting the rings was the main purpose of the event. With the hotel locked down, they were forced to wait for Shuka to arrive, but then Kaname got an SOS message and ran out to help her.

What was your favourite element?
I’m actually really enjoying this series and it seems to get better as it goes. We’re starting to see the players piecing together the puzzle and I feel like we’ll get a fairly big reveal in the near future. Kaname’s approach to the game is interesting as it’s quite different from most of the other players. Most are treating this like a deathmatch, whereas he sees it as a survival challenge and is managing to develop a team and making strategic decisions. Diving in to save Shuka is a dangerous idea, but his survival greatly increases with her on his team.

What have you learnt?
I feel like Shuka is a bit of a disappointment at the moment. She is undoubtedly strong and lethal, but as far as strategies go, she really doesn’t seem to make very good decisions. To start with she was beaten by Kaname, a rookie and now she’s wandered into a confined place which was obviously not best suited for her Sigil. Does that make her a bad character? No, not at all. In fact, you could argue that this makes her a perfect fit for Kaname. Everyone should have their strengths and weaknesses, otherwise, it’s going to get boring pretty quick. To that point, Kaname isn’t great at everything either, but he seems to be an inspiring leader as he’s been able to make effective strategies and draw other players to his side. The best leaders don’t claim to know everything but bring the right characters together to utilize everyone’s strengths.
