Darwin’s Game (Episode 6) – Hardness

Kaname swims into the flooded underground shopping area to rescue Shuka, while Ryuji tries to get some information out of Sui, the girl they found near the flooded entrance, but she’s not about to play nice!
What happened?
Kaname swims through the icy water searching for Shuka until he comes to a frozen wall. Creating a gun with his Sigil, he shoots his way through and finds her barely alive. After performing mouth to mouth resuscitation on her, she comes to and kisses him. They manage to find their way back out where they find Sui and Ryuji who appear to have come to an agreement. She had tried to kill Ryuji or rather the spirit of her dead twin brother that inhabits her Sigil had. Sui managed to stop him from killing Ryuji. Kaname invites her to join his clan despite her desires not to kill anyone.
The second ring drop occurs with the diamond ring appearing at the hotel. The Eighth attack with force, but the Florist is ready for them. Rein, however, has fled through the sewers and is heading towards the location of the real event treasure, if the coordinates on the rings are to be believed. The absence of Wang in the hotel attack is troubling!

What was your favourite element?
I think Rein may become my favourite character in this series. I love that she’s the brains behind everything at the moment and seems to have a plan. Kaname is fun, but his plans are much more impulsive and he seems to focus on the moment. Maybe it’s Rein’s Sigil, but she is constantly planning multiple steps ahead. What Sui said about how she wished for her brother to come back when she joined the game and he did in a way, makes me think that Rein’s Sigil wasn’t an accident and plays into her analytical mind. Either way, she’s awesome and I am worried that she’s about to run into Wang!

What have you learnt?
It almost goes without saying, but every character should have their own motivation and reasons to act the way they do. Oftentimes, we’ll see everyone else’s desires pushed aside in favour of the protagonist. Not in Darwin’s Game. I love that they all want different things and while there is some overlap, it’s interesting to see how they’re acting in different ways to achieve their goals. It can change the dynamic of the group, much like the Florist staying and fighting for the rings because he needs the money. He would have been far more useful to the group had he gone with Rein, but that’s not what he wants. Characters can make selfish or bad decisions just like in real life and it makes them more believable too.

Rein is definitely my favourite character here. Kaname leaves very little impression and none of the other characters have really impressed but Rein is the one who seems to stop and think things through. If that was all, she’d still be interesting, but I loved that in the hotel she used her ability to fight against the gunmen. Fighting may not be her first impulse but she’ll certainly do it if needed.
For sure, when she whipped out her gun and started taking out the attackers it was a very welcome surprise. She’s very calm and calculated which is to be expected when you can see the near future and be able to respond. Definitely the brains behind this group.
