Arifureta: From Commonplace to World’s Strongest (Episode 17) – Reunion

Tio made it back to Kaori and Myu and told them that Hajime would be fine. Will they really be able to escape from the volcano? Oh, they already did. It must have been difficult… Oh, I guess not. Well, let’s get Myu home!
Arifureta: From Commonplace to World’s Strongest (Episode 17) – Reunion
What happened?
Tio was exhausted but fine. She passed on Hajime’s message to Kaori and Myu and told them that they should push on as she had absolute faith that Hajime would succeed. They planned to meet him on the way to Myu’s home if he survived! Several days later, Hajime looked up at the clear blue sky from the deck of his submarine and allowed himself to breathe. Yue found him and decided it was a good time to sit on him. He thought back to how they escaped from the volcano. It was remarkably simple really. Grab the ancient magic – spatial magic, the artefact, and then swim out in Hajime’s lava proof submarine.
As Hajime, Yue, and Shea dinner on fish, they were surrounded by merfolk who wanted to know what they were doing there. They also seemed to assume that Hajime had come to steal more merchildren. Of course, that was when Myu fell from the sky overhead as Tio and Kaori tried to catch up with her. Hajime saved Myu and then took her to her home and reunited Myu with her mother. She seemed nice and was determined to thank Hajime if it took her entire life… kind of like marriage or something…

What did you think?
The last episode felt a little like a turning point as the series veered towards average, and bear in mind that average is a significant improvement over last season. Well, this episode was a u-turn. What a disjointed mess of an episode. At the end of the last episode, Hajime, Shea, and Yue were trapped inside the volcano. As obvious as it might be that they would escape, it would have been nice to experience a little tension.
Instead of delivering that, they decided to show us that they all got out and then flashback us back to how it happened, which was then massively anticlimactic. Not to mention it wasn’t even that interesting. After that, we got a bunch of scenes that may or may not have really connected that well and certainly didn’t show us anything other than Hajime’s submarine might be cool. Well, it better be because it survived in molten lava… I was very disappointed with this one.

What have you learnt?
This episode is the poster child for how not to resolve a cliffhanger. It was bad enough that we really don’t need cliffhangers at this point in a series. Viewers have either bought in and will continue no matter what or they left long ago. Obviously, you don’t have to love it to have bought in either. Morbid curiosity is sometimes enough. So, already it was kind of pointless, plus there was no chance any of them were going to die. This isn’t that kind of show.
So, if it’s kind of redundant, at least make it entertaining. Well, that didn’t happen here. They basically walked into the dungeon, got the magic and walked out again. It really was as simple as that. After that, the rest of the episode seem to bounce around until we ended up at Myu’s home and had to watch her mother try to put the charms on Hajime. I just hope that this is the end of the road for Myu as they continue on their adventures without her. Maybe leave Kaori behind too.
