Author Journey (April 11, 2022) – The Otaku Nanny

The Otaku Author Journey April 11 2022

Apparently, I did something that the universe didn’t like and it is determined to make sure it gets me back for it in the pettiest way possible by stringing the punishment out over several years…

Hot Topic

The weekend before last, I received a phone call from our nanny. She told me that she was probably going to have to move and would not be coming over on Monday. I said that I understood and that she could let us know what was happening when she has a clearer picture. My gut told me that she would not be back. I started running through the scenarios of how I would deal with this going forward.

Of course, on Monday we heard nothing so we messaged her to see if she needed any help. She replied by telling us she moved across town and it was too far to come back, so she wouldn’t. Now, Ottawa isn’t that big. If it had been me and I didn’t want to commute, I would have at least worked my notice and said goodbye to the child I was looking after properly.

So, going forward, I will be the Otaku Nanny! Luckily, I had just got things to the stage where I had almost no work to do on the website for a while and was looking forward to really getting back to writing. However, with all the changes my son has had to deal with in the last couple of years, I decided that I didn’t want him to go through any more. That’s why I’m taking over until he starts school in September. Of course, I will still be doing my day job… just in the nights again!

What have I been watching/reading?

I know I said this section would just be about anime and not split between seasonal and historic, but I completely forgot that I will be covering manga too, and maybe light novels at some point. I have recently discovered that I can get through manga while I’m working. I run a lot of code and hefty procedures that take a lot of time and occupy all of my laptop’s hardware. When we were in the office, I would just have to sit there and look busy. At my home office, I can grab a book and flip through some pages while I wait.

Fire Force teased us with the possibility of a fairly epic fight, but it wasn’t to be. It did drop some information on us in a fairly lazy way, but otherwise, it was a fine episode. The rest of the series will be delayed while Yomu moves home after two years of living in Japan.

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood threw us back into the heavy stuff as the boys met up with their old teacher and learned some harsh lessons.

In That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime it was pretty much four episodes of discussions and plotting, and I loved it. I’m sure I won’t speak for everyone, but this was fascinating.

And here’s the newest series of posts. I am covering Magical Girl Apocalypse or Maho Shoujo of the End. This hasn’t been made into an anime, but I really hope it does one day. It’s not for the squeamish!

I will mention the seasonal shows one more time as I published the season reviews last week, so if you want a full recap of my highs and lows of the season, check them out.

Work in Progress

And just like that, all of my time vanished. I don’t regret the decision to put my son first or even put myself back into the position of sleeping less and less again. In reality, I only need to hold out until July when we have help arriving in the form of a grandparent. That’s not too bad and I already have all my posts scheduled for that time period.

I will continue to run through the plots on my walks with Gus because he still needs walking. Previously, I would listen to podcasts while walking but have now switched entirely to music as that allows me to focus on my thoughts.

I’m finding that I am already a little more tired, but I did this for over a year back at the beginning of the pandemic so I’m sure I’ll slip back into things. It is a massive relief that I don’t have to worry too much about this site for a while. Of course, I’ll continue with my weekly updates because you never know what will happen next…

The Plan

The historic updates below are all from the Magical Girl Apocalypse series which I actually finished the night before the first post went live. That’s always a nice feeling. I have the same thing coming up with the series that will follow That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime.

For now, I’ve removed Fire Force season 2 from the plan as I don’t want to put any extra pressure on Yomu. I’ve moved countries twice so far and it’s not a lot of fun, except for getting there. Anyhow, I’ll add it back in when we’re ready. So, yeah, other than my Author Updates, Quarter 2 is done. Nice!

  • Quarter One
    • Author Journey – 13/13
    • Historic Anime – 39/39
    • Seasonal Anime – 36/36
    • Bonus Posts – 18/18
  • Quarter Two
    • Author Journey – 2/13 (+1)
    • Historic Anime – 39/39 (+2)
    • Seasonal Anime – 3/3
    • Bonus Posts – 1/1
  • Quarter Three
    • Author Journey – 0/13
    • Historic Anime – 12/39 (+3)

I plan on continuing to chip away at Quarter 3, but it will be at a much slower pace than before. That said, watching anime definitely kept me sane the last time I was working like this.

  • MSR (Paranormal Harem Rom-com)

So, no updates here, but I may switch everything to plotting for a little while. They’re quicker to do and I can jump in and out. I also would love to come back to writing with a pile of plots to work from. Plus the more I get down, the more I can think them through. It’s like having my own anime studio in my head where I can test things out.

Final Thoughts

The universe may think it’s winning, but I’m going to take everything it throws at me and turn them into story fuel. It took me a week to write out the full plot for one novel and if I have basically another twelve weeks of this… could I possibly plot another twelve novels? Sounds like an epic challenge. We’ll see.

Anyhow, thanks for reading and stay safe.

  1. Sounds like you’re doing the right thing, and your family will be better for it. But what a huge change! And her not saying goodbye propertly… wow.

Hope you can, as you said, turn this into story fuel!

    • Yeah, it’s frustrating on a number of levels, but not saying goodby to my son is the kicker. He asked when she was coming back everyday last week. No mention today though which is good.

I’ll need to remember all this when the time arises and I can really push out some words. Hopefully, no more false starts…
