Author Journey (April 22, 2024)

2024 04 22 The Otaku Author Journey

I came into the week expecting a fairly quiet and relaxed run of things… and then, the day job thought otherwise! Starting to feel like they are exploiting my work ethic. A change would be nice, right about now!

Author Journey (April 22, 2024)

Favourite Moment!

Last week, the latest volume of My Dress-up Darling arrived at my front door. I also picked up volume thirteen of Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead from my library. So, you can expect to see reviews of those slipping into my release schedule very soon. My goal is still to read all of the books I currently own rather than borrowing from the library and buying more, however, I had preordered My Dress-up Darling and I do want to try to keep up with the books as they become available. If only I had more time to read… and watch anime… and write… and draw… I think you get the picture. There’s never enough time.

Writing!

I’ve mentioned a few times over the last couple of weeks, but my life is in a state of change. There are plans in place to stabilize things, but they will take a while to fall into place. Once that happens, I’m going to be back in a good space for writing, hopefully. Until then, I’ve identified a couple of things I can do to prepare myself. The first thing is character profiles. While I know the characters inside and out, I need to get it down so I don’t trip myself up with the descriptions.

Anime!

Last week was all about keeping up with my seasonal shows and getting through some more of Rokka -Braves of the Six Flowers-. I did start a new show – Hokkaido Gals Are Super Adorable! and so far so good. I have a soft spot for Gals so I have high hopes for this series.

Manga!

Once more, I only managed to fit in two volumes and since I’m reviewing three a week this is a problem. In fact, I now find myself staring at my posts page on my site and I only have eight scheduled posts, this one included. Once upon a time, I had more than sixty but that feels like a lifetime ago. Where has the time gone?

Aspirations for the week!

Since the pandemic, I have been working from home. Because I have two children and a wife who works a crazy job, my work hours have been all over the place. As such, I often find myself catching up with work in the twilight hours. I don’t mind when it’s my decision to use that time to catch up. However, of late, people have started to expect it, meaning I’m getting ridiculous requests on Friday at 16:51 or I’ll receive a comment about how something needs to be finished off early the next morning when the amount of time it would take would never fit into that time frame. This does not make me happy. However, it does make me even more determined to write my books. One day, I hope to walk away from the corporate world and work for myself. I’ve got a lot of work to do to get to that point, but that’s what keeps me up at night.

I’ve got a few things to work on and a lot riding on them, so that’s what I’ll be doing this week and every week until it happens. Right now, I’m going to get myself ready to hit the ground running when writing time becomes available. I need to make it more accessible. Anyhow, thanks for reading.

  1. I almost fainted at the thought of 60 scheduled posts! I just looked at my 9 scheduled and feel like I defeated a demon lord LOL. I hope things fall into place sooner rather than later. There is nothing quite like waiting out change. I also cheer you on. Leaving the corporate world sounds so nice. I would like to do the same.

    • Thanks. I think it may have been slightly higher but can’t be sure without going through all my old posts. It was nice having a buffer. I miss those days.

I’ve got some way to go, but that’s my end goal. I have been doing a job I don’t care about for most of my career, so I feel like I need to break away. Hopefully, I’ll get there…

  2. “While I know the characters inside and out, I need to get it down so I don’t trip myself up with the descriptions.”

Can confirm! And the more material you produce, the larger the body of material with which you need to remain consistent. I think creating your character profiles is a great idea!

    “Where has the time gone?”

That’s exactly why I had to throttle back to four posts a week (with only 3 being new material). As you said in this post, there’s just never enough time.

“One day, I hope to walk away from the corporate world and work for myself.”

If it helps, you’re about 20 years ahead of me in terms of where in your career you’re making this decision. In fact, it’s no exaggeration to say I gave up on replacing my career with writing and decided I’d plan to write full time only after I retire from my primary career. Which, if the economy continues the way it’s going, so be approximately one day after I die.

What I’m saying is that 20 years head start is a good thing.

    Good luck this week!

    • What I’m working on is a long epic story so having a reference sheet is going to be invaluable. Plus, I’d like to get all those details down so that I can keep everything consistent.

Once, I finish reviewing Rokka, I’m going to dial back a little too so that I only do three seasonal anime episodes, three volumes of manga, one season review, and my Author Journey post for a while.

I feel like I’ve been saying it and thinking it for quite some time now too. I just have to get my ass in gear and do it. There’s been so many set backs that my momentum keeps getting smashed. Hoping to get it all under control soon. I don’t want to add another ten or twenty years of something that I don’t care about to my resume.

      Thanks. You too!
