The Otaku Author Journey September 12 2022

It wasn’t a perfect week, but it was an improvement on the week before. The writing is getting easier which is nice. I have limited time, but when I do sit down, I’m getting a thousand words each time. It all adds up!

Hot Topic

I finished Nights of the Living Dead which was an enjoyable anthology. I feel like they work really well for walking Gus as I can get through a story in one walk, however, I have decided to follow this with The Living Dead which is twenty-seven hours long and was the book that George A. Romero was working on when he died. I am getting fully into the zombie headspace.

This is great because I’m still writing my zombie novella. It’s currently over ten thousand words and will probably end close to twenty thousand. It’ll be an excellent way to dip my toe back into the world of publishing. I am also a little worried about the dark humour that has appeared in my story which actually had me laughing out loud as I wrote it. The imagery is a bit out there.

What have I been watching/reading?

It was not the best week for anime and manga as I only managed to watch two episodes and read two volumes. I have been planning more of my schedule for 2023 and am excited to dive into several new shows. Of course, this week was the busy reporting period in the day job and that always eats into my personal time. It’s annoying, but then I get to claw it back during the quiet periods.

Anyhow, here’s a quick look at what I posted last week.

Record of Ragnarok was all about Brunhilde’s expressions as they continue to overshadow the poorly paced fights.

Even more Olivier Mira Armstrong in Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood and you’ll hear no complaints from me!

We’re ending season two of Fire Force with a training montage… However, it gave Tamaki a chance to shine. I hope we see more of her like this.

What does every show need? Masters of the Universe: Revelation knows the answer – zombies.

And don’t forget the ecchi posts that are only available directly on my site.

Seven Mortal Sins got a little more serious and showed what could have been had they taken this approach all the way through.

This episode of My Wife is the Student Council President! is all about panties…

Oh no! It’s the last episode of My Dress-Up Darling! I’ve loved this show which reminds me I have a bonus post coming out later this week.

Work in Progress

I managed to write on five days last week which was good. Typically, when I was at my peak, I wrote every day. I’m a very habitual person so if I can make it part of my routine, it becomes easy and I’m already starting to feel it coming back. Even with a busy work week, I managed to find time to write. I did reduce my anime and manga intake, but I have a good buffer there so it’s all good.

I think I was right to do a smaller project first. One of my top strengths from the Clifton Strengths test I did back at the beginning of 2021 was achiever which means that I get energy from completing things. That’s why I think blogging has become so natural for me. I can write a post in under an hour and there’s something achieved. Writing an eighty-thousand-word novel takes a lot longer and it’s hard to track achievements. Hopefully, doing a smaller project will help me get over that hurdle. So far, so good.

The Plan

I have one post left to prepare for 2022. It’s an amazing feeling. I’m very happy with how this schedule has worked out for me. Do I miss covering seasonal anime live? Yes and no. A fun community can develop around covering the new shows, but I love to binge a series so much more than watch it weekly.

If I keep writing seven posts a week for the rest of the year, I’ll be in good standing for the start of next year. Of course, this was a slower week so that’s even better.

Writing

  • MSR (Paranormal Harem Rom-com)
    • Chapters – 0
    • Words – 0
  • Valiant Lineage (Epic Dark Fantasy)
    • Chapters – 0
    • Words – 0

    • Words – 7,423
  • RIP Tide (Zombie Novella)
    • Chapters – 10 (+5)
    • Words – 10,623 (+5,307)

Picking up speed. If only I had got this going earlier in the year. No, mustn’t be negative. This is feeling good again.

Final Thoughts

I know I’ve not even finished RIP Tide, but I’ve already got an idea for what’ll replace it in the Writing section. I was talking with Yomu when he asked if the zombie story was one I’d mentioned to him before. It wasn’t and now I want to write that one too. That one was a zombie isekai story so should be a lot of fun to write. Plus all the others… It feels good to be more positive about things again. Long may it continue!

Anyhow, thanks for reading.

Sounds like you’re on the right track! Ever watch the biography of Harlan Ellison called Dreams with Sharp Teeth? There’s a section where he talked about editing Dangerous Visions. Your statement put me in mind of that anthology.

“I’m a very habitual person so if I can make it part of my routine, it becomes easy and I’m already starting to feel it coming back.”

I’m the same way. Not having to decide whether i’ll write makes it easy to focus on what to write.

I see RIP Tide is over 10,000 words now! That’s great! It can see the momentum picking up!

    • I haven’t seen the documentary but will have to find a copy now. I’m excited by how ridiculous it appears to me in my head. Just hope I can get the message across in my writing.

I seem to have settled on a writing time so when I have that available it’s working for me. Will try to add some more in at some point. I’m very happy that RIP Tide is over 10k. I regularly underwrite so I tend to add more in the edits. Should end up being a good length for a novella.

Thanks for the support. It helps knowing that someone is keeping an eye on me.
