Author Journey (November 14, 2022)

The second week of NaNoWriMo hit a bit of a snag where I lost four days. It was one of those knock-on events where life impacted the day job, which impacted my free time, which impacted my writing.

Hot Topic
And Monday started the week off nicely. I read one manga volume, watched an episode of anime, and wrote two chapters. If I had only been able to continue that all week, I would have been far happier now than I am. Basically, my youngest ended up having to stay home the rest of the week and since it was the busy period at work, I had a lot of competing priorities and sadly writing had to take a back seat for a bit.
Thankfully, once the week was done I was able to dive straight back into writing so it hasn’t impacted my will to write, just my word count. There’s still time to catch up with NaNoWriMo but I’m not that worried either way. Sure, I’d like to finish it and will try to do that, but the fact that I’m still writing is more than I could have hoped for. I’m confident that I will finish this draft and then I can start working on some edits. It was a knockback, but not a knockout.

What have I been watching/reading?
I watched one episode of anime this week and it was the start of a new series so that was exciting. Of course, not watching anymore all week was frustrating. I also managed to read two volumes of manga which is less than I’d have liked, but it did take my reading count to one hundred books for the year. That’s a nice milestone to hit.
Anyhow, here’s what I posted last week.
The Executioner and Her Way of Life is a fascinating series so far and that’s mostly down to the actual main character Menou.
I feel like Mieruko-chan should have been bigger than it was. This episode was incredible and the scene at the shrine was brilliantly creepy.
You’d think I would run out of things to say about Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood after 42 episodes. Apparently not, I’m still going.
I had a big personal revelation in Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba: Yuukaku-hen. Can you guess who my favourite character is?
I went most of my life not knowing about suppositories. Anime characters don’t seem to be so lucky. Poor Ui got sick in My Wife is the Student Council President! and needs some medicine.
Another bumper Sankarea: Undying Love week with anime and manga reviews plus a little piece I wrote about Ranko and the plight of the girl next door/childhood best friend.

Work in Progress
Even with several lost days, I managed to keep things moving along. It’s not where I had hoped to be, but closing in on forty thousand words is nothing to be annoyed about. Judging by where the story is at now, I’m thinking it’ll be around eighty thousand total, but it has the potential to go for much longer. Either way, the fact that I am still writing and enjoying the story, I believe I will finish this book. I’m also looking forward to diving back into RIP Tide after this break. There’s been more than enough time for me to approach the edits with a fresh perspective.

The Plan
So, the weekly target for NaNoWriMo is 11,669 words and I only managed 4,614. I had a thousand-word buffer at the end of last week and now that’s long gone. The last time I did NaNoWriMo I was behind for a long time and it took a monumental last day to hit the monthly target. In that sense, I’m not too worried. I don’t want to have to repeat that, but I’ll do it if I’m close. Of course, the main point of any of this is to finish the first draft and not hit some imaginary target.

Final Thoughts
At this point, I’m almost used to the interruptions of Real-Life Family Events. I’d be lying if I said they weren’t frustrating, but that just shows how much I enjoy what I’m doing. At least I am in a position where they don’t impact my immediate ability to keep posts coming. The drive and determination to build my bank of posts have been a huge help.
I’m going to try to get back to work now, but thanks for reading.

It was that kind of week, wasn’t it? Glad that it didn’t knock you off stride!
I seem to Yo-yo back and forth at the moment. It’s fine, but would be nice to get some real momentum going.
Sorry to hear younger family members weren’t feeling well this week! I hope they made a quick recovery. Yeah, sometimes life pops up and schedules kind of go by the wayside. I’ll cross my fingers for you that things go a little better for your writing next week!
Thanks. He should be back at school tomorrow. I’m looking forward to having a nice quiet house. Got lots of writing to catch up on. Not to mention all my other plans…
