Gunbured x Sisters (Volume 4) – The Final Bloody Chapter!

What happened?

Helen and Miranda were at the church when Noelle arrived. They had encountered her before but were too weak to do anything but run. This time, they were more confident in their abilities. However, it did them little good. Noelle controls blood, turning it into spikes and projectiles. Helen was the first to suffer, losing an arm, but that didn’t stop them from trying. Miranda soon realised just how outmatched they were when Noelle paraded the tattered remains of Helen’s body before her. They never stood a chance. Meanwhile, Dorothy and Maria were rushing to the church, worried that the attacks were a way to hit their headquarters hard. They were not wrong. When they arrived, the ground was littered with corpses, all impaled on spikes, their bodies torn apart. Inside, they found Noelle holding the head of a pure-blood vampire while the Pope lay on the ground bleeding.

Maria tried to reason with her sister, telling her that she had been searching for her for five years. Dorothy, however, pulled her gun and tried to shoot. Noelle was the one who killed her wet nurse Teresa and she wanted revenge. Eventually, they stopped to hear what Noelle had to say. She revealed that the church had aligned itself with the vampires in order to hunt down the other demi-humans and claim the land for themselves. Everything was set up to keep a plentiful supply of blood for the vampires while allowing the weak-blooded vampires to be killed by the Order. Dorothy was horrified by the revelation. Then, Doctor J burst into the church and carried Noelle away. It was too soon for the final confrontation. Maria ran after Noelle and asked her to come with her. Noelle refused, instead offering Maria the chance to join her.

What did you think?

So, this series ended with Maria and Dorothy going into the vampire’s territory to hunt down Noelle and Doctor J. Shannon and Kiki went with them and ended up fighting Doctor J while Maria and Dorothy took on Noelle. Doctor J died when she protected Noelle from Maria’s ultimate attack, however, Noelle escaped, leaving things unresolved. Overall, I have enjoyed this series, but it has not been the roaring success that I was expecting when I learned what was involved in the story. Action – check, ecchi – check, vampires – check, yuri – check. This series checks so many boxes that it should have been incredible.

Part of me wonders if it would have got there eventually, but then it also failed to really live up to my expectations within four volumes. And to make things worse, this volume definitely felt rushed. Some of the action scenes were exciting but there were also lots of panels where it was hard to really make out what was happening, especially when Doctor J took on her true form. I wanted to love this series. I had high hopes and was ready to take to the rooftops to tell everyone about it. However, I can’t. If you like vampire stories, then this will be enjoyable, but I doubt it will displace your current favourite vampire story. It is fun. Just not amazing.

What was your highlight?

I was really surprised by how viciously Noelle took out Helen. That image was truly haunting and was probably the only moment in this entire series where I felt like we were finally going to see its true potential. It was horrific, however, we had only just met Helen and Miranda in the last volume and spent little time with them other than seeing them argue with Maria and then with their bodies entwined in their bed. Other than that, they just appeared to be clones of Dorothy and Maria which could have been used in a far more shocking way, had we not realised that it was them fighting Noelle. Anyhow, that fight was horrific and brutal even if the stakes and emotional ties were almost non-existent.

Other than that, it was nice to see Maria and Dorothy finally get together, and it was great that Maria was the one who made the move. Dorothy has been trying to hit that for three books so it must have been a huge relief to her to finally get what she really wanted. However, reading this after Parallel Paradise, I can’t help but notice how disappointingly tame the ecchi scenes ended up being. They don’t need to be as graphic as Parallel Paradise, but we definitely needed more than we got.
