What happened?
Yota finished telling Rumi the story about Kanejo and how his mother was found murdered, but Kanejo was nowhere to be found. He assumed he must have been summoned to this world which was how he disappeared. He revealed that he didn’t think he could beat Kanejo since he was so completely focused on winning. Kanejo killed his mother because he dared to think he could beat him in a regional Kendo tournament. How do you fight that? Rumi reassured him and said that he had already tried hard enough and that she would stay with him whatever he decided. And, since they were trapped in their room with nothing else to do, Yota and Rumi mated. They mated over and over and over. Leigh-Mary had increased the guards outside of their room and warned them about looking inside, no matter what they heard. However, Highlander, who wanted Leigh-Mary to mate with Yota so that she could extend her life, told the guards that the only male in the world was in that room. They charged in and threw themselves at him.
Leigh-Mary, however, was still not prepared to go through with it, not without knowing more about the Empress. She visited with Nishina and asked her to tell her everything. The Empress came from their world with Kanejo and in her attempts to make him love her, she drank his blood and became a witch. She was responsible for creating the other witches. She also bathed in the blood of virgins so that she could stay young. There was a room beneath her castle where it happened. Leigh-Mary decided that she needed to see the room for herself and since her last moon was probably days away, she would need to mate with Yota. Even so, it was not easy for her to go through with it, not until Yota had touched her face. After mating, Leigh-Mary revealed that she was going to the Empress’ castle to see for herself what was going on. Yota told her that he would go with her, but first, he wanted to see Nishina. Nishina told him that he needed to kill Leigh-Mary since the Empress had touched her and could turn her into a monster at any moment. Then, as they prepared to head to the castle, the spell keeping Kanejo asleep was lifted. Either the Empress had released it or she had died!
What did you think?
This was an amazing volume as far as the progression of the story went. I loved how it was revealed that Yota and Kanejo were the two people selected to come to this world by the Moon! Nishina and Yuma (the Empress) just happened to be too close to them when that happened and got carried along with them. I’m not sure why Kanejo arrived three thousand years earlier than Yota, especially as Nishina seems to have been there for three thousand years too. Obviously, there are still many more questions to be answered. And that’s if we accept what Nishina is telling us, although Highlander also confirmed what Nishina told her about the Empress, so what possible reason could she have to lie? What indeed?
It was nice to Kia again with her big witches hat and, of course, she was keen to mate with Yota again after being apart for so long. Rumi definitely got jealous, which could be a troubling thing for the future. I’d hate to see the history of this world repeat itself but with Yota and Rumi in the place of Kanejo and the Empress. Anyhow, Nakta beheading the Empress was a surprising move, especially as none of the other witches have been that easy to kill so I doubt that things are as taken care of as they seem. I’m a little surprised that the Empress is not similarly protected as Nishina who cannot be killed even when her head has been removed. So, it seems more likely that she lifted the spell on Kanejo because of the situation, hoping that he would kill Yota and Nishina.
I think it’s worth noting that while there are twenty volumes available in English, the current number of chapters is around two hundred and eighty which would bring things up to twenty-eight volumes. And, of course, the series has not been finished yet. Volume twenty-one comes out in March 2025. Who knows when we’ll get to the end, but it should be one hell of a ride!
What was your highlight?
Nishina was without a doubt my highlight of this volume. She revealed so much about the Empress and her twisted attempts to stay young. I wonder if we’ll ever get to see the true horrors of it. Part of my hopes we don’t. There’s also a lot that Nishina is keeping to herself and we saw that with her conversation with Yota. She gave him that look like she was ready to kill him again. I wonder what happened to her when Kanejo kidnapped her and Yota’s mother. Again, I have a pretty good idea and I’m not sure I really want to have that confirmed either. One way or another Kanejo needs to die for good, but with so many volumes still to come, I can’t see the main villain dying so soon.
One thing that I have been wondering is whether any of this is actually real. Yota passed out after being hit by Kanejo and was already having a hard time processing the news that Kanejo told him about his mother. What if everything after that point, including this entire world is in Yota’s head and it’s his way of processing the trauma? To save the world, he literally needs to defeat his demon, Kanejo. Almost everything they’ve encountered is something that he’s been aware of. His knowledge of the monsters they’ve faced could suggest that they too are being created from his own memories. Admittedly, I would hate to discover that the entire thing was a dream, but it’s certainly a possibility.
