Parallel Paradise (Volume 2) – My Body Won’t Stop!
What happened?
As soon as they had finished having sex, Rumi passed out and then a strange mark appeared on her neck. Youta assumed it showed that the curse had been lifted. Well, that was a relief. He got dressed and waited for her to recover. Once she was awake, he told her about the curse and how she was now free of it. She would have a long and normal life. Rumi was furious. Did he mate with her out of pity? Struggling to handle the complexity of the situation, Youta told her that he did like her and hoped that they would do it again and again, but he also told her that he would have to sleep with other girls too, at least until he had killed the Jealous God who put the curse on them to begin with.
Before they could continue their discussion, Youta noticed that someone else was there. When he ran to the door, he found a puddle on the floor and the unmistakable smell of Lilia’s Fountain of Desire. He tracked her down in the library and asked her how much she heard. She heard everything, so he figured he had better mate with her there and then. However, before they could complete the act, they were interrupted by the news that some girls had been attacked by the Karu outside of town. Rumi had gone ahead, but they would need to follow as there were multiple Karu.
Youta soon learned why people were so suspicious of males. The Karu were like mutated human males with four holes in their faces. They were drawn to the girls and once they had them, they forced themselves on them. However, unlike when Youta made love to them the girls would be free of the curse, when the Karu did it, the girls died. They were too late to save Yuri, but Youta arrived to stop Rumi and Lilia from being attacked. Then, the Karu started chanting Veeru and then ran away. When the other members of the Quintet heard about this, they decided they would take Youta to collect Fire Phosphorite, a rock that burns. The party consisted of Youta, Rumi, Misaki, Momo, and Haru. It should be an easy trip. Nothing is going to happen…
What did you think?
We got a lot more information in this volume which was nice. The strange mark on Rumi’s neck seems like a rather convenient way for Youta to know who he has saved and who is still a virgin if that is what the mark is showing us. Lilia continues to be quite the oddball even in this society, especially after she ran off, crying that Youta wouldn’t do it with her, despite almost doing it with her twice already. Rumi interrupted them in volume one and the Karu in this one. So, it’s kind of clear that he’ll do it with her. It seems like drama for its sake, but we’d better keep an eye on that situation.
We also got our first glimpse of the things that Youta is going to have to deal with. As soon as the girls knew that they wouldn’t die at the age of twenty by having sex with him, he found himself tied up and essentially raped by Momo. She didn’t need to be quite so forceful with him, but it was definitely a sign that this might not be the paradise he initially thought it would be. I was also reminded that Youta can be quite a jerk. He is in this situation where he doesn’t have to try. The girls will come to him without any hesitation and quite literally throw themselves at him. It makes it harder to enjoy his situation when he’s constantly belittling them and making asinine comments. That’s my one big criticism of this series so far.
Anyhow, I do love the world-building and how they’ve lost so much over the generations. Not having elders to pass on the wisdom of the previous generation has left them barely functioning as a society. They can’t read. They’ve lost the ability to look after their weapons or maintain their buildings. You can bet that any stories that are passed down from generation to generation are slowly twisted and misquoted. It’s a very bleak situation. And then, they throw in the Karu and all the other strange creatures here. I can’t wait to get to the bottom of everything. It feels alien, but also familiar in a very deliberate way.
