Parallel Paradise (Volume 16) – Prisoner of Love and War!
What happened?
Despite Yota’s best efforts, Toreese decided not to mate with him. Her fountain of desire was overflowing, but still, she held firm. Yota knew that all he needed to do was touch her, but he didn’t want to force her into it. However, all this flirting had gotten Yota all hot and bothered so he asked if Rumi could come to see him and relieve some of the tension, maybe even show Toreese what she was missing. Toreese couldn’t hide the fact that she was getting turned on but still refused to change her stance. Yuma entered their room and was surprised to see what was going on. She decided to stay and watch too, claiming their belief in Justice and Virtue would ensure they resist. Yota was angry that they were being stubborn when their lives were the most important thing they had. He managed to challenge Toreese. If she could resist his touch, he would drop it. She wanted to prove that they were right. They weren’t.
Recalling a vow they made to one another, Yuma drew her sword and prepared to kill Toreese to save her virtue. However, one of Yuma’s moon crystals shattered as she prepared to strike. Since she was about to die and the town had already lost two guardians, it would be foolish to kill Toreese. Then, as Yuma prepared to wait for the end, Yota begged her to mate with him quickly. There was still time, just! After Toreese reminded Yuma of something she once said to her, she agreed, providing everyone else left the room. Yota got down to business as quickly as possible and was getting increasingly frustrated at the absence of the ring of knowledge. Eventually, it did show up, ensuring Yuma’s life was saved. Yota’s next task was to go to Kalnaha to collect the god-killing sword. However, Mimi appeared before them and then transformed into a monster. She had eaten Sandra’s brains and become a witch!

What did you think?
I’m glad that Yota is starting to be a bit more considerate with his ability to initiate mating. He had a dark spell for a while where he was getting carried away with his power. However, I love that he’s not taking no for an answer with the higher guardians who were all near to their last moon. I understand that everyone is prepared for death as that’s the way it’s been for three thousand years, but when the chance to overcome that obstacle arises, I am surprised by how many resist. It’s especially frustrating when the guardians are the strongest warriors so having them alive for longer is better for everyone involved.
There definitely seems to be something going on with Sandra too. I don’t see how Mimi got the better of her without there being something else involved. I remember Sandra having a strange visitor in the last volume and it seems to me that Nishina has regained her memories, but it keeping it to herself. The way she stared daggers at Yota was haunting. I get the feeling something bad is going to happen on the trip to Kalnaha… well, if they actually get going as this volume ended with the beginning of a farewell party and we all know how this is going to end. I think it’ll be at least another day before Yota hits the road with Rumi and Nishina.

What was your highlight?
As soon as I saw Mimi’s new form, I had a pretty good idea that she was going to be a hydra. It was almost a little disappointing how easily she was defeated, but it made sense since she had just gained her powers and was clearly unaware of her strengths and weaknesses. It was interesting that we were shown a flashback to Mimi’s childhood and how she had been treated unfairly which resulted in her wanting to become a witch. Of course, Sandra told her that she ate one thousand humans to become a witch believing that Mimi would give up on the idea. It showed just how messed up Mimi had become that she was prepared to go through with Sandra’s advice. That’s pretty messed up.
However, there is a story of a Fijian king who is believed to be the most prolific cannibal in human history who believed that after consuming one thousand people he would become immortal. Thankfully, someone close to the king killed him at nine hundred and something. Better to not take the chance that he was right, however, it’s insane to think that he made it that far without someone stepping in earlier. Anyhow, I wonder if Lynn Okamoto was aware of that story when he wrote this part. It’s a great idea to sprinkle ideas that are based on history into your stories as it adds a level of believability, even if it might appear crazy. Of course, real life is often stranger than fiction!
