Parallel Paradise (Volume 14) – Making the Ultimate Choice!

Nishina told Yota off for being a jerk with Mei, and as soon as she was gone, he thanked her. He was starting to lose himself to this world and that was just the slap in the face he needed to regain his conscience.
Parallel Paradise (Volume 14) – Making the Ultimate Choice!
What happened?
At first, Yota assumed that Nishina had regained some of her memories, but she denied it, instead telling him that she could feel it deep within her that his actions made her hate him. Having said her piece, she turned and left leaving Yota to think through his actions as Mei lay asleep beside him. At first, he seemed to resent her opinion, but then he thanked her. In the morning, once Mei had woken up, she found Yota kneeling beside the bed, begging her forgiveness. He realised that he had taken it too far and was a complete jerk to her. Worse still, after all that the Ring of Knowledge had not appeared around Mei’s neck.
She was furious that she might not be saved from her Last Moon, even after putting up with Yota’s actions. Mei jumped off the bed and started hitting him. Rather than, retaliate, he continued to apologise. After giving him a good beating, Mei rushed to meet up with the other guardians of Arlslayer who were starting to think that she had mated with the male and run off. Relieved to see that she was fine, Piano was shocked when Mei confessed that she had slept with the male, with Yota. She told her about mating and almost lost herself to the memories. Then, she revealed to Piano and Lomi that you can survive the Last Moon by mating with a male which is why the Empress wants anyone with the Ring of Knowledge executed.

In order to keep Mei’s treasonous words a secret, Piano made her reveal where Yota was hiding and take them there. However, Yota had already relocated and was watching as they stormed his old room. Rumi told him not to blame Mei as she was simply not one to lie. After failing to capture or kill Yota, Piano returned to the High Guardians to explain the situation. She was surprised to see that they weren’t surprised that she had failed and even less so when she told them that those who mate with a male are freed from the curse of the Last Moon. Her devotion to the Empress was already starting to crack.
Piano returned to Mei and explained the situation and how she was struggling to come to terms with what she had learned. Then, one of Mei’s Life Stones broke. Rumi became aware because of her Life Stones and told Yota that one of the Guardians was about to die. He decided to rush to the Guardian headquarters in the hopes of saving Mei before she died if that was even possible. Nishina warned him that he would almost certainly be killed if he did, but his resolve was absolute. That seemed to please Nishina.

By the time they got there, it had already begun. Piano could only watch as Yota knelt down beside Mei and began to cry. She tried to reassure him and thanked him for showing her how enjoyable life could be, if only for a short time. Then, she vanished leaving Piano and Yota staring at her empty clothes. Piano turned her attention to Yota, pulling out a morning star and swinging it in the air. Yota told her not to be silly and that if she killed him, she would have to watch many more people die. He told her to mate with him so that he could save her, but that just seemed to make her angrier.
Piano tried to put on a resolute face, but that cracked when she discovered that Yota had mated with Nakta, her teacher. She attacked, pinning Yota to the ground with one morning star as she swung her other at his head. He slashed with his sword that Kazuchi had made him. It sliced through ball and chain, giving him the chance to make his move. Yota kissed her. She punched him away and then stood there, gripping her clothes as her Fountain of Desire started to leak. She refused to give in and demanded he leave. Since she was Nakta’s pupil, he made her the same proposition. If she could resist his touch for ten seconds he would leave. If not, then they would mate.

Yota did everything he could, but at the end of ten seconds, she pushed him away and told him to leave. The second he turned away, she dropped to the floor and frantically tried to resolve her frustrations herself, but it wasn’t working. Just as Yota was about to walk out the door, she called to him and begged him to mate with her. They mated and mated and mated, while Rumi watched on waiting for her turn. When they were done, Piano had passed out from being overstimulated. They left her on the floor in the Guardian Headquarters and hurried home to take care of Rumi’s needs.
The High Guardians found Piano the next morning and were disappointed to see that she mated with Yota and even more so that she had the Ring of Knowledge around her neck. To make matters worse, she then told them that the Empress only feared that Yota would change the balance of power. That was enough for them to imprison her and prepare to execute her. Lomi, the only remaining regular Guardian of Arlslayer hurried to find Yota and ask for his help to free Piano before she was taken to the Capital to be executed. Then, when they learned that Piano was to be executed that night, Yota made his move. He confronted the High Guardian in front of the execution and even convinced the soldiers to join him. Then, as he prepared to fight one of the High Guardians, he dropped down dead. Back in his world, the life support had just been shut off…

What did you think?
And we’re back! After the last volume left me feeling quite underwhelmed, I was pleased to see that this one brought things back. Ironically, the sex in this series is starting to become a bit of a backdrop. I almost don’t even notice it anymore because I’m far too interested to see how this world works and find out what’s going to happen to everyone. I did wonder if Yota dying in his world would impact him in this world and that certainly seems to be the case. I wonder what is going to happen to allow him to come back now, and even keep going!
The other thing that was really interesting in this volume was that Mei died even though she mated with Yota. It would appear that the Ring of Knowledge is the important part of whether they live or die. However, that still hasn’t been confirmed really. All we know is that Mei did and that she didn’t have the ring. We really need to see how Lilia and Hanahana are doing as the only other girls who didn’t gain the Ring of Knowledge. What if we see someone with the Ring of Knowledge die from their Last Moon? That would throw everything we think we know into chaos. All we have to go off is what Genius told Yota way back at the beginning of the series.
I was also pleased to see that Yota gained a bit of perspective from Nishina’s condemnation of his actions and his character. Unfortunately, I don’t see him suddenly becoming a saint, but acting like less of a jerk is definitely a step in the right direction. I need some answers as my head is spinning as I try to keep up with all these possible scenarios.
