Gigant (Volume 6) – We Should Break Up…

What happened?

The devil has now travelled from the East Coast to the West Coast, destroying city after city and killing more than ten million people. The army has been trying to slow it down, but nothing has worked so far. Word is that once it reaches the sea, they are planning to hit it with a nuke! Desperate times indeed! Back in Japan, the soldiers from the future are still trying to find PaPiCo, however, their search stalls when one of them discovers food. They have nutritional paste as their main source of energy, but that can’t compete with a noodle pot, let alone a meal from a real restaurant. The search has kind of been put on hold.

Meanwhile, Chiho has been working around the clock since her battle with the Gods of Destruction. She’s on TV at every opportunity. She’s recorded adverts and interviews. She’s even staring in her own movie. However, that’s not given her much time to see Rei. Amazingly, she’s been able to negotiate a three-day break in her schedule so that she can take some much-needed vacation time. And for that, she’s taking Rei to Ishigaki where they can be alone. Unfortunately, it’s hard to do things without the public’s scrutiny when you are the most famous person in Japan.

Chiho is recognised on the plane, although she slept through all the attention. Everywhere they went, people recognised her. Of course, the press was no exception as paparazzi trailed her everywhere. Even in a private resort with a private pool, they were never really alone. By the time they got back to Tokyo, word of Chiho’s relationship with Rei had been released and the big focus was on the age difference with her being twenty-four and him sixteen. After a rough day at school, Rei tells Chiho that they should break up for two years. Then, he’ll be old enough that no one will object. He’ll make a movie that gets him recognised and then cast her in every movie he makes. Chiho accepts his offer, but is devastated!

What did you think?

Well, this was inevitable. Chiho may have won over Rei’s mother, but the public is a very different beast. And as with all of these sorts of relationships, they fall apart because it’s too hard to keep something like this a secret, especially when there’s so much focus on Chiho. They should have realised that. Admittedly, they should have waited, but I can also see how damaged Chiho is by numerous toxic relationships including the ones with her family members. She was broken and ready to give up until Rei showed her some true affection without strings. If only they had met at a different stage in their lives. Of course, the other issue here is that there was an incident with a condom that is bound to come back to bite them.

Other than that, I thought the idea that the soldiers from the future would be completely derailed by food was a great idea, especially if they have been surviving on some sort of nutritional supplement. It certainly makes me rethink things in The Terminator movies. There’s no way Kyle Reese wouldn’t have grabbed a bite to eat and then given up on his mission. Well, maybe not that extreme, but it’s definitely something that I’m going to be thinking about with any time travel stories I’m working on or reading. And finally, the devil survived a nuclear attack. What’s it going to take to defeat it? Will Chiho be called in? Will she be able to do better than the five soldiers who were sent to the United States who died fighting it? Things are looking bleak!
