Gigant (Volume 5) – The Saviour of Shinjuku!
What happened?
The Gods of Destruction are not about to go down easy, however, after Chiho destroyed one they are enraged and that’s making them careless. Chiho dives at one and grabs hold of it. It tries to squash her, but she shrinks and slips inside its body. I think you know what happens next! Having defeated two, Chiho stares down the remaining God of Destruction with a hint of confidence in her eyes. She charges. They crash into one another, Chiho swinging her body around his, shrinking as she does so. It’s desperately trying to stop her, but as soon as she is gone from sight, Shinjuku, possibly the whole of Japan falls silent. They wait. Even the God of Destruction doesn’t know what to do. Then, she emerges, ripping through its body.
Exhausted, Chiho leans against a skyscraper and looks down at the people flooding on the streets, chanting PaPiCo. There are tears everywhere. She can’t believe the reception she’s getting. It was unthinkable that anyone would show her this much attention. Rei got off the train and ran to where she was. However, he could only watch as she shrank down to regular size and was then taken away in a JSDF convoy. Rei was finally able to speak to his mother over the phone. She checked to see if he was all right and then told him to never let that girl go. I think she might be a fan now!
Days passed with Chiho suddenly becoming the face of everything. She was on the television, on the covers of magazines. Rei’s father had even managed to secure the rights to make the movie of Chiho’s exploits. However, Rei still hadn’t seen her. Then, he got a letter from her. She asked him to place the keys to her apartment on the coffee table. Had he lost her? Reluctantly, he returned to her apartment and put the keys down. That’s when Chiho jumped on him. They were delighted to see one another and quickly made up for lost time. Then, as they lay there catching their breath Chiho’s phone started to talk to them. It sounded like Siri, but it definitely wasn’t. Something else is coming…

What did you think?
The sheer joy of watching Chiho defeat the Gods of Destruction and win over the people was incredible. However, seeing Rei’s mother’s reaction to things was even more satisfying. She hadn’t just accepted Chiho, she warned him to never let her get away. Again, I couldn’t believe how quickly I was turning the pages, but the action was absolutely relentless. Honestly, it was breathtaking. I’m certain that this series will get passed over by many because of the ecchi content, but make no mistakes the action is incredible and you will be missing out if you don’t at least give it a go.
There were some interesting moments where Rei and Hiroshi were discussing AI and how humanity was wasting the power of the tool to un-pixelate porn or create deepfakes of celebrities. There were also some moments where they talked about Chiho’s social media account and how she now had more followers than Donald Trump. I am enjoying the social commentary in this series too. It’s not just about a giant naked lady fighting giant grotesque monsters or a porn star and a high school boy having copious amounts of sex. I mean, that’s there. But it’s more than that. Towards the end of the volume, we were introduced to five strangers wearing similar clothes to the one who put the device on Chiho. They commented about how they arrived later than expected and couldn’t locate their commander… The plot thickens…
