Gigant (Volume 4) – The Battle for Tokyo!
What happened?
The giant robot attacked the city with an arsenal of weapons, laying waste to everything in its path. The JSDF fought back with tanks, attack helicopters, and just about anything they could get their hands on. Eventually, they brought the giant robot crashing to the ground, but the cost had been incredible. The JSDF lost countless soldiers and the loss of civilian life was staggering. The message boards on ETE were filled with angry comments about the repeated failure to reduce the population of Tokyo to below one million. The hatred was intense as if none of it was real to them.
Rei left his house to get some fresh air, but while he was gone another poll was posted on ETE. This time, three Gods of Destruction would descend on Tokyo to finally get the job done. This was more than the JSDF could handle. The three giant figures destroyed buildings with ease. Stomping through the streets, they left a trail of casualties as people screamed for their lost loved ones. And, it was only getting worse. The internet lit up with calls for Chiho’s release. Maybe, she could defeat these three like she did the last one. It seemed like a hopeful idea, but that’s all they had!
Then, news spread across Japan that Chiho Johansson had been given amnesty. Even before the news got out a helicopter full of paratroopers flew towards Shinjuku. They were charged with guarding Tokyo’s last hope – PaPiCo (Chiho Johansson). She had been equipped with a new space-age fabric from the United States that was supposed to be able to stretch to unimaginable lengths. As they approached, the soldiers began to get nervous, but now was not the time for that. They jumped out of the helicopter with Chiho. She crew mid-air and landed with a thump before engaging the Gods of Destruction. However, there were three of them this time and they soon got the better of her. However, Chiho used the same trick and shrank to avoid their attacks. Then, she climbed inside one and grew.

What did you think?
I literally cannot stop reading this series. It’ll be a week since the last post went live, but I read this volume less than an hour after finishing the previous one and I’m probably going to dive straight into the next one too. The sheer scale of the chaos and destruction is insane. The idea that the hopes of Japan are placed on the shoulder of a porn star is amazing. And, of course, the fabric wasn’t going to hold up. That was just wishful thinking. I was impressed that Chiho could work the parachute, but then she did have a platoon of soldiers around her to help. If only she had aimed to fall into one of the Gods of Destruction, to begin with. Admittedly, we wouldn’t have got the tension that was created when ETE voted to have the Gods rip her to pieces on live television.
This is another of those series where I end up feeling guilty about how quickly I’m going through the pages. Some must have gotten no more than a few seconds per panel before I was whisked away, and there’s a lot of detail that’s gone into them. It’s like Usain Bolt sprinting through the Louvre and attempting to take in all the art. At least, I can go back and reread them, but that’s provided I’m not swept up in the action again. There was one moment that made me smile. Rei’s mother was watching the events in Shinjuku on the television aware that Rei was in there somewhere. She looked worried when Chiho was almost torn to pieces, but then jumped for joy as she burst out of one of the Gods of Destruction. She might have just received Rei’s mother’s blessing…
