Gigant (Volume 7) – What Do I Do?
Rei and Chiho have been apart since they broke up. It’s given Rei a chance to focus on his movie, while Chiho has had some interesting house guests. Oh, and Mochi has disappeared into the future!
Gigant (Volume 7) – What Do I Do?
What happened?
Chiho came back to her apartment after another busy schedule of interviews and acting to find her door open. She ran in hoping to find Rei there, but it most certainly wasn’t Rei. Four people dressed in vests and tight-fitting underpants were standing in her living room. She was about to activate her ability to grow when they asked her to stop, telling her that they were from the year 2135. They had come back to stop an AI that was determined to take over from humanity as the dominant species. Well, it will in a hundred years. For now, it’s content to study humans and it’s using ETE to do that. Its technology is so advanced that it is able to summon titans, which Chiho has already met.
She tells them what happened to their captain and how she came to have the device that allows her to grow. Well, that’s not all it can do. Momonoki takes some time to show her how to fire a powerful beam from her head. She also shows her how to fly. That’s going to take some getting used to. Anyhow, Chiho has work to do so she leaves them at the apartment. When she comes back sometime later, she finds Hefner and Kitou watching her adult videos. In the same way, food is strange and wonderful to them, the act of lovemaking also seems quite foreign.
Meanwhile, Satan, the devil who destroyed many cities in the United States has begun to cross the Pacific and is heading straight for Tokyo and the military is helpless to stop it. Luckily, they still have Chiho. However, Chiho, who’s been feeling a little under the weather has just discovered that she’s pregnant and Rei is the father. She phones to tell him the news and is surprised to find out that he is delighted. He offers to get a job to support them, However, Chiho is loaded. She’d rather he finished school. Even knowing that she is pregnant, the military calls on Chiho to help when suicides climb as Satan reaches Tokyo. Momonoki and her team tell Chiho to sit it out and plan on using her tactics to defeat it. But then, she gets a call from Rei who is struggling. She rushes out to find him.
What did you think?
Seeing how sad Chiho and Rei were wasn’t a lot of fun. I did have a good laugh about the soldiers from the future, especially when she showed them what happened to their captain. Then, Mochi, her dog managed to activate his time travel device and vanished. They don’t know when she has travelled to but are quite confident that she will reappear in her apartment at some point in time. I get the feeling that’s going to be a fairly pivotal moment in the story. Chiho getting pregnant was not a huge surprise given the big deal they made of the condom malfunction in the last volume. It was nice that he wanted to support her, but I had to side with Chiho here – Rei needs to finish school. It’s not like she needs the money.
Seeing Chiho learn about the other powers was cool too. She can now fire laserbeams and fly. Even so, demanding that she fight Satan when she was pregnant is a pretty low move from the Japanese Defense Force. I’m glad the soldiers from the future had more sense and told her to sit it out. I also loved how they marvelled at her way to kill the Titans, especially as she has had no military training. I’m a little concerned about Hefner and Kitou and how they are about to discover sex and what that will do to their ability to fight the AIs. Food has already taken over their lives. This could get really messy. Anyhow, they need to survive the fight with Satan first. This series is just getting better and better.
