Gigant (Volume 10) – Promise Me You’ll Find Me!

Gigant (Volume 10) – Promise Me You’ll Find Me!
What happened?
Tokyo experienced a three-day blackout thanks to the nuclear strikes on the AI spaceship high above them. By the time power had finally returned, the government had confirmed that PaPiCo had died in the attack. Her DNA was recovered from the wreckage. Her state funeral turned into a global event as world leaders flocked to pay tribute to the girl who saved the world. Reih, however, confined himself to his room. He was distraught. He saw Chiho everywhere. His time was spent remembering their time together. When he finally found the energy to leave the house, he went to Chiho’s apartment. While there, Mochi mysteriously appeared. He discovered that Mochi had travelled through time and thanks to the DVD left by the Captain, he figured out what he needed to do.
The Captain had gone further back in time than the rest of his team and had a chance to complete their first mission. He needed to save Dr. Banner from a freak accident as he was the one who would install Asimov’s Laws of Robotics into the Socrates and Plato AIs. Maybe if he survived then they could avert the future where the AI take over. However, he didn’t make it on time, but maybe Rei could. He used the device that Mochi had used to travel back and save Dr. Banner. Of course, he wouldn’t know if it worked until he travelled back to his time.
When he returned the threat of the AIs had vanished. There was no ETE website. Everything seemed normal. Well, apart from the fact that he never met Chiho. He’d saved the world, but it cost him everything. A year later, Chiho was invited to star in a film directed by an up-and-coming director. She jumped at the chance and was surprised to see that the role appeared to have been written for her. In it, she gained the power to grow large which she used to save the world from some out-of-control AI while falling in love with a high school student, Reiji Yokoyama. It was their story, but she had never experienced it until now. Then, when they filmed the scene on the tower where Chiho promised to come back to him, all of her memories of this other life came flooding back to her. She ran to the director, Rei and hugged him, never wanting to let go.
What did you think?
I’m not crying, you’re crying. Seriously though, what an ending. I figured that Mochi and time travel would be involved in the climax, but I hadn’t quite expected this. The biggest problem with time travel as a tool in stories is that it is so overpowered it’s not even funny. Surely, the Captain could have travelled back again to stop Dr Banner from dying, however, my overall feeling is that the people from the future were not as smart as their technology would have you believe. Anyhow, Rei fixed what they failed to and saved the world. He saved Chiho but lost her at the same time. That was a hard pill to swallow.
However, making a movie about their lives together and casting her in the lead role must have been excruciating for Rei to watch. Sure, it would have felt incredibly real and seeing her again would have been amazing, but having to watch someone else live your memories must have left him exhausted day after day. So, Chiho remembering everything was the perfect conclusion to this story. They may have lost a little time, but everything worked out in the end. We even saw Momonoki and her team meet up with their captain, no doubt lost in time since their present would never come to be. This has been an amazing story and it ended in the most perfect way possible. Seriously, my eyes were watering just writing up what happened at the end. This story will live on in my head forever.
