Dandadan (Volume 2) – Now My Balls Are Gone!
What happened?
The giant freshwater crab chased them across town and while it wasn’t as fast as Turbo Granny, it was still too fast for them to outrun. Luckily, Okarun still had access to Turbo Granny’s powers and was able to transform with Momo’s help, much to Turbo Granny’s annoyance. It appeared to be working, but then the crab just upped its game too. Bizarrely, no one else could see it or understand the destruction that it left in its wake. All they saw was Okuran frantically running through the streets with Momo on his back. Then, Momo got an idea.
She led Okuran into a bathhouse. They believed it might be too small for the crab to follow, but it just crashed through the wall. However, it landed in the hot springs which made its muscles get firmer, making it harder for it to move. Unfortunately, Turbo Granny was prepared for this. She called on all the spirits in the neighbourhood to help her, and since there was a graveyard nearby, there was plenty of help coming. They possessed random passersby and chased after Momo and Okarun. Okarun used the last of his strength to run as far as possible, but it wasn’t enough.
Then, they realised that Momo had let go of Turbo Granny. She appeared before them and then merged with the bound god and prepared to kill them. However, Momo used her spirit powers to grab hold of a passing train, carrying herself and Okarun away. Turbo Granny jumped onto the train too, but before they could get to them Momo grabbed them and held them to the train which passed straight through one of Momo’s Grandmother’s barriers, destroying them both.

Well, that’s what they thought, anyhow. The next day, Okarun bumped into Momo at school and while he was desperate to talk to her, he was completely lost for words. It turned out she was suffering from the same affliction. At lunch, Okarun tried to find her. Unfortunately, she was trying to find him too and their paths kept missing. Then, as they both gave up and headed back to class, they walked straight into one another. Their teeth actually touched, although it looked like a kiss to Momo’s friends…
Both got embarrassed and it turned into an awkward fight. Before returning to his class, Okarun went to the bathroom and noticed that something wasn’t quite right. He may have gotten his schlong back from Turbo Granny, but his balls were missing. After school, he went back to Momo’s house with her where her Grandmother examined him… not his missing balls, but his spirit, and noticed that there was another spirit in there. She performed an exorcism with Momo’s help and drew Turbo Granny’s consciousness into a cat doll. She swore to get back at them, but Okuran still had her powers.
The only way to put things back was for Turbo Granny to give Okarun his balls back, however, she had lost them. But not to worry, they were coated in spirit power making them look like golden balls so they might be able to find them. However, they would also attract other spirits who would want their power and if a human found them, their spirit powers would awaken, and who knows what that would do. Well, as it happened a girl from school found one and decided that it was her job to vanquish the evil demon of the school – Momo. Unfortunately, Aira’s new spirit powers had attracted the attention of another spirit!

What did you think?
I think I almost died laughing in this volume. When I saw Momo rolling around on the floor when she realised that Okarun hadn’t noticed that he was missing his testicles for an entire day it was like a mirror staring back at me. I love how quirky and ridiculous this series is, not to mention the weird and wonderful spirits. Of course, nothing compares to Momo’s grandmother, Seiko Ayase. She is hilarious and at the same time a complete badass. I can’t get enough of this series and am already looking forward to when the first season of the anime finishes so I can binge-watch it.
Until then, I will continue to devour the manga. There was another scene that had me dying with laughter and that was when Aira was talking to Momo about the golden ball that she had been gifted by the gods so that she could fight evil. She held it up like some sort of talisman to ward off evil and then placed it against Momo’s cheek. Momo looked at it and then commented that it was one of Okarun’s testicles. It’s just too funny. I hope that Aira becomes a main character after their encounter with the Acrobatic Silky. Anyhow, I’m off to read more. This series is insanely good, and that’s before I even mention the surprisingly interesting relationship stuff that found a way into the middle of the volume. Just brilliant!
