Dandadan (Volume 6) – This Damn House!

Jiji decided to put his trust in the ghost that had been haunting him despite Turbo Granny trying to warn him. He should have listened! Now, Momo and Okarun have yet another enemy to deal with and that’s before you factor in the local legends!
Dandadan (Volume 6) – This Damn House!
What happened?
The Evil Eye took over Jiji’s body. It had shown an interest in him ever since he awakened to his spiritual powers. The fact that he was an athlete just made his body that much more appealing. With this new body, the Evil Eye was ready to see the end of humanity after everything that happened to it over the centuries. With Okarun still missing after attacking the Mongolian Death Worm, Momo was left to face the Evil Eye on her own. Well, she had Turbo Granny with her, but she wasn’t much help in her cat statue form. The Evil Eye sent Momo flying and then had to turn its attention to the worm as it tried to capitalise on their fight.
However, the worm, realising that it stood little chance against the Evil Eye disappeared into the ground. The Evil Eye quickly turned its attention back to Momo, but just when it looked like things were over for her, Okarun appeared and took the fight to the Evil Eye using Turbo Granny’s powers. They came up with a plan to get Momo out of the pit while Okarun handled the Evil Eye. If only things were so simple. They did, however, manage to launch Momo out of the pit in the hopes she would get help, but handling the Evil Eye wasn’t as simple.
After failing to make a rope long enough to reach down, Momo decided to set the house on fire. She planned to soak the water with the fire hoses and lure the Mongolian Death Worm out of the ground where the sunlight would kill it. Amazingly, it worked and the worm was killed. However, the Kito family that it had swallowed all emerged unharmed and they were made that Momo would awaken the volcano. Surely, they didn’t really believe that the sacrifices were the things stopping the eruptions… did they?

What did you think?
This was a lot less creepy than the last volume but packed to the brim with action. The fights were insanely entertaining and involved just about everyone you could possibly imagine. That’s right, the priest from the shrine showed up as Momo was using the body of the Mongolian Death Worm as a giant hose to attempt to stop the magma flow. Then, Granny Seiko arrived, riding Taro, the living human mannequin, down a beam of light from a flying saucer that the Mantis Shrimp alien’s son was piloting, while he was already down on the ground fighting the Evil Eye. It sounds absolutely bonkers and it was, but in such a satisfying way. I loved how it all came together.
Amazingly, they used Taro’s body to trap the Evil Eye and then discovered that heat makes it give control back to Jiji. Cold reawakens the Evil Eye so he’s going to have to stay inside Taro until they can work out a way to stop it, which isn’t looking too promising. We also got to see the old lady of the Kito family fighting alongside Momo and the priest against the Evil Eye and she even utilised her Jennifer Lopez attack. I don’t know why, but that makes me laugh every time! This volume was a ton of fun. I can’t wait to see what happens next.

What was your highlight?
After the last volume, I was sure that the Mongolian Death Worm would end up being an alien, however, the thing it really wanted to point us towards was the geyser eruption when Momo was at the hot springs and how it produced a rainbow – the one that would herald the eruption. So, instead of it being something otherworldly or supernatural, it turned out to be an embellishment of some good old-fashioned scientific observations. That said, I don’t think that rules out the Tsuchinoko turning up at some point, however, the focus will clearly be on freeing Jiji of the Evil Eye’s control on a more permanent basis.
I’m also delighted that the Mantis Shrimp and his son are planning on living on Earth with them since they could not milk the cow in their home world. I just loved the way it pulled all these previous arcs together and created a bizarre and wonderful team for Seiko to boss around. That old lady knows how to make an entrance! Anyhow, this arc is far from over and I think it’s going to weave into even bigger and more insane things. This series continues to get better and better. I can’t wait for the anime to finish so that I can binge-watch it.
