Dandadan (Volume 11) – You Dead or Something?!

What happened?

After defeating the alien from another dimension, all of the Serpoian clones returned to their default setting. They surrounded her, preparing to capture her. However, their leader sent them home, aware of the danger she posed them. He suggested a truce as they were facing a common enemy. Momo agreed but then left him where he was, and since he had no legs, he wasn’t going to go anywhere. However, it was almost ten and she needed to find somewhere to hide. After all that, she needed his help to book a room at the manga cafe. It seemed like a great plan, but the receptionist was looking at himself with a mirror, which allowed the Slit-Mouthed Woman to come inside. She forced the receptionist to check on the room and then came inside.

Momo was hiding inside the Serpoian’s shirt, pretending that her legs were his. The receptionist asked to look up his skirt. The Serpoian told him he loved him, but as he lifted the skirt, Momo saw the mirror and was able to cover it with a piece of cloth, releasing him from the Slit-Mouthed Woman’s control. The next morning, Momo took the Serpoian to her home where she found Aira, Jiji, and Okarun all in terrible condition. Okarun, however, was the worst of them all, needing a machine to breathe for him. Momo remembered how the alien had told her that Vamola led them to this planet so she told Vamola to leave and chased her away. Jiji felt that it was a bad idea and wondered how she could trust the words of their enemy. Anyhow, the Serpoian led them all to a secret facility where they could train to fight these beings who were sure to be using Okarun’s testicle to warp an invading army to Earth!

What did you think?

I loved this volume. The humour was fantastic throughout and it still managed to maintain a wonderfully creepy vibe. The scene at the manga cafe was easily the best, but I’ll get to that in a moment. Seeing everyone lying on the floor in Momo’s house was particularly shocking, even though we saw how each of their fights went. I also love how Aira is stepping up as the leader and driving them all to become the best they can be, as hard as that might seem. Jiji showed that his abilities are growing since he was able to block out the sound of the Slit-Mouthed Woman so that Momo could sleep. However, Okarun somehow split from his body and then was sucked through the telephone to where Seiko and Turbo Granny were fighting a monster. Of course, Seiko spotted him and asked if he was dead or something. Obviously, that’s a troubling prospect.

This volume left things with a fairly big cliffhanger. We’re expecting the aliens to attempt to warp their fleet into Earth’s orbit to launch an attack. Only Momo, Aira, Jiji, Mantis Shrimp, and half a Serpoian stand in their way, possibly Okarun if he’s alive, and Seiko and Turbo Granny if they can get back in time. Anyhow, things are looking dire and I cannot wait for the next volume which is to be released in April with volume 13 coming in June. That should give me enough time to watch the anime, but that’s definitely not going to take me any further. I’m looking forward to seeing how the anime handles things.

What was your highlight?

So, I’ve never really been a big fan of enemies to friends. It’s been something that I had a really hard time with while watching One Piece. I don’t think I’ll ever forgive Franky for the way his family treated Ussop. Anyhow, as hard as that is, I think Dandadan did an amazing job of making that a possibility with the way the Serpoian and Momo were forced to work together. The thing that really made it work for me was how funny that scene was. It was incredibly dry comedy, but that just made it more to my taste. Momo stood behind the Serpoian using its torso as the body and her legs as the legs. The receptionist said he heard another voice, but the Serpoian instantly said that was a fart.

The receptionist wanted to know why he couldn’t smell anything and the Serpoian said that he inhaled it all. It was juvenile, but it worked. Then, the receptionist was going to look up his skirt and the Serpoain told him he loved him. All of this with his stiff emotionless and creepy face which was partially disguised with makeup. It was a crazy scene, but the Serpoian’s response to absolutely everything was hilarious. I’m not sure I’m ready for a lasting truce or him somehow joining the group, but I wouldn’t completely rule it out. I think this was a great way to make him a little more relatable.
