My Dress-Up Darling (Volume 6) – Once You Form Assumptions…
What happened?
The next cosplay event, Marin and Gojo attend is a big one that takes in the aquarium and other areas locally. Not long after arriving in Shizuku-tans Cultural Festival Humiliation Cafe Costume, Marin sees another cosplayer who takes her breath away. It’s Subaru-Hatsu Segawa from CosLuv a dating sim that involves idols. Well, it’s not Subaru, it’s Amane Himeno. At least, that’s their cosplay name. Amane has lost a clasp for the skirt and without will have to head home. But don’t worry, Marin and Gojo are on the case and quickly find it. Then, Gojo offers to fix it, but how will they do it since he can’t go in the ladies dressing room? Luckily, Amane is a guy so it’s not a problem… what!
They then spent most of the day with Amane who told them about some of the tricks of the trade. Gojo had a million questions about make-up and cross-dressing. He’d prepared one for a girl to become a guy, but never the other way around and that fascinated him. Amane was more than happy to show them around and even took them to a speciality shop that sold costumes, make-up, premade wigs, and even boobs! At the end of the event, they went home brimming with ideas and were delighted to have met Amane. The feeling was mutual.
Marin’s next costume that she wanted to do was Arisha, the bunny girl assassin from TsuCom. Gojo is certain that he can make the costume and asks Marin to find a location but to let him check it before she makes a reservation. However, the bunny girl costume is proving harder to make as he can’t get the boobs to stay up. Marin has an idea on how to fix it but Gojo doesn’t want to veer too far from the original. At the fabric shop, Gojo shows the design to the owner who has the perfect solution. The costume needs bones that will hold it upright. That means the top won’t fall down like in the show, much to Marin’s disappointment…

What did you think?
So, this is the first volume to take place after the anime. I was equally excited and nervous. What if it couldn’t keep up with the first five books? Thankfully, I had absolutely nothing to worry about. This is as good as any other volume and it continues to deliver a wonderful message. We saw from Amane Himeno (that name is intentional, right? A-MAN-e HIM-eno!) that he was quick to believe that others would be upset to discover he was a guy dressed as a girl, but no one cared. He worried that Gojo would think he was odd, but he soon learned he was wrong about that. Then, we saw from the shop attendant who initially thought the Gojo was making the costumes for himself how when you form an assumption it can blind you to the truth.
Gojo had spent his entire school life worried that everyone would judge him for liking Hina Dolls, however, in reality, it was only one person’s reaction that did that to him. He assumed that everyone would act the same way without giving anyone a chance to prove him wrong. Luckily, we saw it with Marin’s friends who didn’t seem the least bit bothered that Gojo could make costumes, apply make-up, and loved Hina Dolls. If anything that saw his ability for what it was. Unfortunately, this volume ended with Gojo telling Marin’s friends that they weren’t dating, which they aren’t, but his instant reaction left Marin wondering if her feelings were completely one-sided. I hope they resolve that quickly because I don’t want to see these two drift apart, even for a minute.
