Gojou doesn’t know if he has enough time to make the costume in time. And that was before his grandpa hurt himself. And before he’d considered mid-terms. And the fact that he’d never made one before!
My Dress-Up Darling (Episode 4) – Are These Your Girlfriend’s?
What happened?
Gojou came back from shopping with Marin and was still focused on how he would make her dress in two weeks. He had also forgotten to call his grandpa so he was waiting up for him. Of course, he was delighted to find out that Gojou had been shopping with a friend. He was a little surprised, however, when one of Gojou’s bags fell over and the lacey stockings fell out. So surprised that he fell over and hurt his back.
The visit to the hospital and staying with relatives took a couple of days out of Gojou’s already busy schedule. Then, he remembered that he had mid-terms to study for. Where was all the time going? Not long after, he answered a call at home and was asked about a tour of the Hina dolls. He told them he could only do it in a couple of weeks, but that didn’t work as the visitor was returning to France the next day. Gojou invited them to come over after school and gave them a tour.
That was even more time lost. Gojou broke down, exhausted and unsure of how to proceed. He considered the idea that maybe he wouldn’t be any good at it anyhow. There is no guarantee that you will be good at something just because you love it. Then, he remembered a conversation with his grandpa and how he told him that it will get hard, but you will be able to keep going if you have a love for it. That’s what keeps you going. That’s why you can’t give up.
Amazingly, Gojou finished the costume with time to spare and let Marin know. She came over and couldn’t believe what she was seeing. Yes, the event had been in two weeks, but she hadn’t planned on cosplaying at it. She had no idea how long a costume would take to make. Then, she realised why Gojou had been so distant and what he had been going through. She broke down, crying at the pain she must have caused him. Gojou tried to comfort her and asked if she wanted to try it on. That way he could make any adjustments if necessary.
What did you think?
This episode was amazing. You could literally feel the pressure Gojou was facing, especially as things piled up on top of his already busy schedule. Seeing him break down and start crying was the most refreshing thing I’ve seen in anime in a while. With everything we’ve all been through over the last couple of years, I’m sure there are a lot of us who are feeling that sort of pressure. I know I am. Sometimes, you just have to let it out. I also loved the message about how loving what you do can help you overcome an obstacle that someone else might give up on.
The thing that really broke me was Marin’s reaction when she found out that he’d been struggling to get this done for her. She realised instantly that her miscommunication had caused him a lot of pain and anguish. She was horrified that she did that, even unintentionally. Marin is a treasure. I mentioned in the last episode how I was expecting Gojou to say she looked beautiful and near the end of the episode I thought we were going to get it. For now, we will have to wait, but it’s coming. I do wish he’d hugged her when she was crying though.
