Magical Girl Apocalypse (Volume 15)
What happened?
Space and time collapse around the demon as it gets its revenge for being locked up for centuries. Unfortunately, it gives the others the chance to defeat him by entering the rift and finding the parallel world where the other Himeji had completed the ritual. The demon is not ready to let them go easily though.
Himeji united all the alternate Magical Girls, forming a bridge to the rift. The witch then teleported them closer. They just needed to enter. However, the demon wasn’t too pleased and obliterated the alternate Magical Girls, instantly. That was when Rintaro Akuta arrived, his body merged with Hana-chan’s using Confusion, wielding Miu’s magical sword. He told the others to run, he would take on the demon alone.
They couldn’t believe what they were seeing but thanked him all the same. He chastised them for not going fast enough if they had time to thank him. They hurried through the rift and searched for the right world. Rintaro put everything into his attacks, even taking the time to mock the demon, which just seemed to make it angrier.
At one point, Rintaro managed to slice the demon into thousands of millions of pieces, but even that wasn’t enough. The demon landed a deadly blow and then decided to give Rintaro the chance to say his final words. He soon regretted that as Rintaro ensured he would have the happy ending that no one was trying to achieve. Of course, there was more to it than just getting off at thought of facing imminent death.
Mikano arrived on the scene moments later and tried to talk to Shinobu, but he was lost within. The demon was getting tired of all these intrusions and decided to kill her quickly. However, Hana-chan was already inside the demon’s body and took control using her parasite powers. There was nothing the demon could do. Surprisingly, that was when Raile Muroku appeared and asked Hana-chan if she could find Shinobu. She found him and pulled him out. It turned out Raile was Mikano’s father and seeing his daughter upset was the only thing that bothered him.
Meanwhile, the others arrived at the site of the ritual and discovered Sou Shirokane, who they thought was dead. Of course, it wasn’t Sou, but Makabe… Well, not exactly. It was Kurorogi Rei, the Witch’s husband who died long ago. He has been transferring his consciousness from body to body, waiting for his chance to take over. Now, he had it and no one would stop him. He entered the casket of light and erased all of existence.
Future Tsukune, however, had other ideas. She managed to save Tsukune and Kii from the past. They were all that was left of the reality they once knew. All that stood now was a planet that was controlled entirely by Kurorogi.
What did you think?
This was an incredible volume. I absolutely loved the fight between the Demon and Rintaro. The brief glimpse of his past told us a lot about who he was and the forces that shaped him. We’ve seen what a scumbag he is and how he treats others, but this was easily his crowning moment. He stepped up in a big way and, true to himself, went out in a memorable fashion.
So, we discovered why it had to be Kii that made the baby with Tsukune… true love. Seriously! That was a really dumb and kind of boring reason, but I suppose we now know at least. I still don’t buy into these two as a couple, especially as I preferred Kaede. If this is the way it ends, I’ll be disappointed. Of course, it could all go horribly wrong too. Still, that fight was epic!
What have you learnt?
In the last post, I mentioned how killing someone from one timeline wouldn’t necessarily kill all versions of them and that it was dependent on when the timelines splintered. Well, no one got the memo as they decided to let poor old Inspector Rintaro Akuta die along with his younger self. It looked cool and all, but it shouldn’t have happened.
Officer Rintaro is from this future and as such his past has already happened. Any changes in the past would have created a new timeline and new people. There was no way that the younger Rintaro would ever become Officer Rintaro, so his death shouldn’t have had any impact. Anyhow, that was probably the least of my issues with this one.
If Makabe was a completely random ass-pull, then Kurorogi was that to the nth degree. I know Makabe said that it wasn’t his real name and they used Shirokane’s wife as the reason he got to Makabe, but there was literally no way anyone could have predicted either of those incidents and that makes them feel like cheap tricks.
Being surprised is great, but if you can’t work back from the surprise to see that it all made sense then it suddenly becomes quite unsatisfactory. That’s how this series has felt. I love it, but there have been several questionable reveals. Well, I’m onto the final book. I’m looking forward to see how this all comes together.
