Magical Girl Apocalypse (Volume 5)
What happened?
Tsukune finds Kaede running around the hospital and is delighted to have her slave come back to her. Well, Asuka is. Then, Tsukune’s father finds them and asks what’s going on. Of course, Kaede hijacks the conversation and demands to know why there are Magical Girls that Tsukune created running around killing everyone. Apparently, it’s all for the happy ending.
Kii left the helicopter which was a good move as the magical zombie versions of Ashiya and Natsukawa returned to the helicopter and killed everyone. He was almost killed by another Magical Girl though, but a mysterious cloaked person saved him and then patched up his injuries. They left him with a note telling him that only he could change the future.
Meanwhile, Rintaro raced through the hospital with Yoruka and Miu in the hopes of finding the one that zapped him into the past before. It’s their only way to escape from this nightmare. They will be able to heal up and then, Rintaro will hunt down Tsukune and stop any of this from happening. However, the parasite Magical Girl finds them first and kills Yoruka. This leaves Rintaro furious and he attacks only for the Magical Girl to punch through his chest.
But Rintaro had the dust from a Magical Girl wand in his ID which was in the way of the punch. It entered his bloodstream and transformed him. He grew back his arms and beat the hell out of the parasite Magical Girl. He demanded some answers and worked out that the Magical Girls had come from the future to change things. He resolved to find Tsukune and kill her, ending this madness. Miu, however, was found by the time travelling Magical Girl and zapped into the past.
Everyone seemed to gather on the roof of the hospital and confronted Tsukune. Even Kii got to see Asuka. Rintaro told them all what he was planning and since he was powered up by the Magical Girl dust no one could stop him. He stabbed Tsukune and the world started to crumble around them. Kii shot Rintaro with a Magical Girl wand/gun. Kaede was then killed by a magical zombie. Kii’s only choice was to kill Tsukune and change the world.
The two mysterious figures that had been interfering with the plan were finally tracked down by the Magical Girls. They tried to escape, but it was no use. The Magical Girls crushed Tokyo Tower to nothing in order to get them. However, the figure had expected as much and hoped that she had done enough to ensure the happy ending. That mysterious figure was Kaede from the future!
What did you think?
This series just gets crazier and crazier, and not just in a violent gore-filled way. Rintaro, the human garbage can, was amazing in this volume. He’d already done some pretty memorable things at the end of the last volume, busting his arm to save Yoruka and Miu. Of course, that doesn’t change who he is or what he’s done, but it was some nice progression. It was when he became some sort of Magical Girl hybrid that things went mental.
I was laughing out loud all the way through his scenes which were action-packed, to say the least. Of course, this all led to some interesting discoveries in terms of the story, however, it constantly fell short of giving us anything conclusive. If anything, it just raised even more questions. I’m going to attempt to pull together some of those in the next section in the hope that they are all answered at some point.
What have you learnt?
The first thing I think I should bring up was the end panels which showed Himeji who was clearly alive and using someone to speak for him, like a puppet. He was talking with the Magical Girl that chased future Kaede down. Basically, what the hell is going on here?
Then, there was Kaede from the future who has been somehow interfering with the plan and was responsible for the time travel Magical Girl. So, why did the time travel Magical Girl send Miu into the past? Not to mention what future Kaede was doing and who was the child-like thing that was with her?
Where did Asuka come from and, as Kaede pointed out if Tsukune’s personality changed after starting high school how did she have all the crazy Magical Girl designs in elementary school?
There are many more questions to be answered but these are the main ones right now. One of the things I love about this series is that as soon as you think you might have an idea as to what’s going on, you very quickly realise that you don’t. You don’t know shit! I have eleven more volumes to get through. Literally, anything can happen at this point.
