What happened?
Thomas Andre was not used to being denied anything, so having Jinwoo refuse to back down left him no choice but to attack. Of course, he had never faced anything like Jinwoo before. Their power levels were wildly different, which came as a shock to the man commonly understood to be the strongest in the world. Finally, Thomas Andre conceeded defeat. His guild members rushed to heal him, shocked at the damage they found. Then, Jinwoo vanished. He appeared in Seoul with the shadow of Dongsoo who he named Greed.
Jinwoo returned to the United States where Jinho had been completely healed by Beru. Now, it was time to take care of the real reason they had come. A gathering of the strongest Hunters in the world had been called to discuss a new threat facing the world. One of the ten strongest Hunters had already been killed and another had gone missing. A strange magical energy had been discovered in the atmosphere, concentrated in nine spots around the world. The strongest was in the skies above Seoul. After some more discussions, Jinwoo was given a list of the ten strongest Hunters to protect. At the party, he assigned shadows to each of them.
However, there was already more things going on back home. President Go was attacked by a being claiming to be the Frost Monarch, however, it wasn’t after Go, but the fragment of Luminosity within him. Apparently, there are nine fragments in all, and they have already recovered two. Jinwoo arrived near the end of the fight, breaking into the alternate dimension the Frost Monarch had created. However, he was too late to save Go. News of three major deaths within the Hunters spread around the world, shaking fear into everyone. Then, a giant gate opened in the skies above Seoul. During this time, no other new gates appeared around the world. There had to be a connection!
What did you think?
I liked this volume a lot more than previous ones, and that was probably because of the way the story developed. Even though Jinwoo is still massively overpowered, we’re seeing more instances of him not being able to do whatever he wants. Being unable to save President Go was the most noticeable instance. It also feels like it’s starting to come together with the other Monarchs trying to hunt down Jinwoo and kill the Shadow Monarch once and for all. The only question left is exactly where does everyone stand?
The way things are looking now, the Monarchs are the bad guys, but they were enslaved by the Rulers, or at least some of them were. Surely, that makes the Rulers the bad guys. However, Luminosity sounds like a Ruler who has come to Earth to create a way to fight back, gifting magical power to humans, by spreading itself among them and the Gates for them to get stronger. So, did Luminosity betray the Rulers or where the Rulers actually the good guys to begin with? I’m not sure, but I’m enjoying trying to piece it all together.
I just hope that the story is able to pull everything together with a coherent ending that answers all of these questions. I also hope that it doesn’t do this in the form of a massive piece of exposition, which seems like the most likely way as there’s so much to cover. I’ll admit that I was starting to get bored of Jinwoo just pounding everyone to submission, but this volume did enough to reignite my interest. I hope that continues.
