Solo Leveling (Episode 7) – Let’s See How Far I Can Go

What happened?

Jinah Sung was surprised to see that Jinwoo had come back from the last raid intact. She assumed that it must have been a strong party. If only she knew how right she was. Jinwoo brought home fried chicken and a case of beer. He was looking forward to relaxing and processing what he had to do in the last dungeon. It was him or them. He knew that. He knew that if it came down to it again, he would do the same thing. That didn’t make it any easier. Maybe the beer would help. However, as soon as he took a swig, a pop-up appeared warning him of a toxin which was then neutralised by the ability he gained from surviving the double dungeon.

Jinwoo had received two rewards for surviving the double dungeon. The first was a temporary one that healed all injuries – hence his arm and leg being there when he woke up. He also got a long-lasting buff that made him immune to toxic and abnormal conditions – such as the beer and improved regenerative capacity. His body would heal itself faster than most other hunters. This ultimately meant that he couldn’t get drunk. Disappointed, he tried to go to sleep but was woken by Jinah who told him that a Jinho had phoned. He wanted to meet up.

Jinho was looking at becoming certified as a guild master. To do that, he would need to clear twenty dungeons, so he wanted to hire Jinwoo to be a part of his team. He would pay him thirty billion for nineteen raids. He also promised to keep his secret. It was a good deal, however, Jinwoo still wasn’t sure who he could trust and what he was capable of. Later on, he went for a run with his sister and soon left her behind as he raced ahead. He accidentally ran eleven kilometres instead of ten and was surprised to see his counter went over the goal. How far could he go with it?

He was able to double each of his goals and as a result, was given a Blessed Random Loot box which gave him a key to another instance dungeon. This one was S-ranked, however, the prize for completing it was an Elixir of Life that could cure any magical illness, likely including the one that put his mother in a coma. Jinwoo went to the location of the gate and opened it. Inside, he was instantly attacked by Hell’s Gatekeeper, Cerberus – a three-headed hellhound. Within seconds, it had taken off half of his HP, including one of his arms. He used a full recovery and quickly ran for cover. He tried to escape from the dungeon but Cerberus attacked, forcing him to lose his teleportation stone. Jinwoo was forced to use Kasaka’s Venom Gland which made his skin as hard as stone but permanently weakened his muscles…

What did you think?

I loved the scenes with just Jinwoo and his sister, Jinah. They have a very realistic relationship which is quite refreshing for an anime. Siblings can get weird far too often for my liking. Anyhow, those moments were fun, especially when Jinah kicked Jinwoo for suggesting she had come for a run with him because of the fried chicken. Then, there was the scene with Jinho. My gut is telling me that after Jinwoo’s battle with Cerberus, he’ll contact Jinho and accept his offer. The money is too good to pass up and he will get a chance to level up without the scrutiny of the Hunter’s Association. I don’t think it would look weird given that Jinho and Jinwoo survived the dungeon together. They can pass it off as a friendship that blossomed in dire circumstances.

Other than that, let’s talk about the fight with Cerberus. That was incredible. One thing that usually annoys me with these sorts of shows is how long everyone spends standing around. The monsters seem to wait forever to do anything, allowing the heroes to make all sorts of plans. Not here! Cerberus was on Jinwoo the second he came through the gate and it did not let up. I loved how frantic it was and how much Jinwoo panicked as he realised how outmatched he was at first. I can believe he would resort to using the Venom Gland as he was running out of options. Now, I’m curious whether the damage he received to his muscles as a result of drinking the venom will be cancelled out by his other ability. There’s lots to look forward to in the next episode.

And not to mention Hwang Dongsoo who was planning an international murder vacation, but not until his schedule calms down. I can’t wait to see him show up and cause all sorts of problems for Jinho and Jinwoo. Their saving grace will likely be that he will be focused on Jinho, believing that Jinwoo is an E-ranked weakling.

    • Younger me might have agreed with you, but kids and a pandemic later, I’ve got no tolerance for it any more.

  1. I really like that the story humbled Jinwoo a bit. He’s been steamrolling things lately – with effort, but, still – and was clearly getting a little big for his britches when he called the mighty sum offered him “chump change.” Sure, it *might* be so in the future, but it isn’t right now. So he got a little reminder that he still has a long way to go, and now he has a specific quest to propel him forward.

    • Agreed. I think that was probably the best thing for the story at this stage. Realising that he isn’t strong enough to do everything he wants should ground him a little and I hope he does end up working with Jinho. It’ll be interesting to see how he handles his sudden change of heart when he asks Jinho if the offer is still available.
