The Kingdoms of Ruin (Episode 9) – The Ruined Kingdom of Mamuta

What happened?

The entrance to Mamuta was beneath a giant statue of a woman’s bust. The inside of the city wasn’t much more discrete. Abandoned and overgrown with plants, the city was lifeless. Rollercoasters and amusement rides stood between buildings, all covered in weeds – the only thing left living. That’s when Doroka saw a person in the street. She jumped off the bike and ran to help her. She was naked and afraid, apparently running from someone or something. Luckily, Adonis realised what it was and managed to pull his gun. It was a Madoa and not a person. Madoa are mechanical dolls made for sex and this one appeared to be searching for something to satisfy its desires.

After taking care of the Madoa, they searched the nearby buildings, following the sounds of women’s voices. Eventually, they found a room with several Madoa inside, huddled around a corpse. They were continuing to function, although they seemed to have some sentience, questioning why they were made to do this. Why did they continue? Adonis took care of them and then went outside and made a small EMP device from car parts and magic. He carefully ended the lives of all of the remaining Madoa. Doroka grieved them and the witches of Lunamilia. Adonis asked her if she really wanted to continue with him after he was responsible for their deaths. Surprisingly, she didn’t blame him since the witches wanted to use him and Chloe in their war against the humans.

Then, as they went to leave the city they were confronted by a man from the Redia Empire. He greeted them and then destroyed their motorbike. At last, Adonis had someone to fight!

What did you think?

So, this was a surprising episode. The theme that I enjoyed in the last episode seemed to continue with this one reminding me a little of Ergo Proxy. At least, that’s what the dead city of Mamuta felt like. As creepy as it was, I loved the idea of the sexbots continuing to function after all of humanity had died or gone. That was absolutely horrifying and probably one of the more intriguing ideas that this series has brought up. I think they should have released Adonis from his imprisonment directly into a world that has crumbled, long after the war between the humans and witches. He could have travelled the post-apocalyptic world searching for a way to satisfy his need for vengeance, but never truly found it. That could have been a fascinating story.

Anyhow, we’re not watching that story and despite how interesting an idea this episode brought up, it was massively flawed. We were briefly introduced to two ninjas, Five and Six. They were awesome and felt like a much-needed change in style for the series. Well, they lasted all of five minutes before Shirousagi killed them. What was the point? It was a complete waste of our time as they served no purpose. We already knew that Shirousagi was dangerous. That much was obvious, so this felt unnecessary. Also, the idea that the people of Mamuta sold all their women to pay for sexbots is bonkers. Even more strange is how Adonis knows about any of this considering he’s been locked up since he was a small child. It feels like almost no thought has been put into creating a cohesive story with the focus instead on the shock factor.
