What did you watch?

This was another series that I covered for Ecchi Hunter and it was a lucky find in one sense. It doesn’t have ecchi as one of its defined genres, but it definitely had more than enough fan service to qualify though. I have a soft spot for isekai too, so this series managed to hit both. The only thing left was whether the story was any good or not. Surely, it’s not going to stumble at the finish line! Let’s dive in and see what we find!

What happened?

Tsukasa, a gifted young politician wakes to find himself in a strange new world. Brought back to his full strength by an Elf, Lyrule and a Byuma, Winona, Tsukasa and the other six prodigies seek to thank the village by improving their lives. Each prodigy has a different skill set and all of them will come in handy.

There are those, however, who don’t wish to see the relatively poor village move up in the world and soon, the prodigies are faced with a choice. Either they save the villagers and change the world together in the process or step back and watch the worst happen. It’s not much of a choice, but they decide to help. Things quickly escalate from there.

What did you think?

The story started really strong, but it slowly faded away until the last couple of episodes were a disappointment. In the beginning, we followed Masato as he went about bringing down a trading monopoly and creating an open market. Ringo built weapons that let them defeat a corrupt lord and rescue Lyrule. The other prodigies all helped in their way and it was looking good. Then, with the introduction of Oslo El Gustav, the series just went nuts. In the last episode, Tsukasa fired a nuclear missile! It all just seemed to get crazier and crazier until it started to get silly.

What was your favourite moment?

I really enjoyed the arc with Masato as he used his business skills to shake a monopoly. However, in episode 8, after the series had slipped further and further from the believable, they seemed to embrace that fact and had Aoi guide a missile through the streets and across the rooftops. It was insane but so much fun. Aoi was a big favourite of mine and as a master swordswoman that was bound to happen.

What was your least favourite moment?

There was an episode where Tsukasa and Ringo were ordered to take some time off. That would have been fine had the story been able to progress without them. Unfortunately, we too were forced to take some time off and watch them go on a date as they relaxed and did little. Ringo did get some funny dating advice from Aoi and Keine, but it really felt like a filler episode which is absurd in a twelve-episode season.

Who was your favourite character?

You’re expecting me to say Aoi here and I don’t blame you. However, Aoi was my second favourite character. It surprised me as much as it may surprise you but I found Shinobu to be the most interesting character. It’s possible that she had more to do and therefore got more screen time whereas Aoi was relegated to being Akatsuki’s bodyguard for a large chunk of the series. Shinobu was cunning and strong, but also able to read a situation and adapt to it.

Who was your least favourite character?

There were a lot of bad villains and I mean in the sense that they were just caricatures of villains as they didn’t feel like real people with actual motivations beyond being bad. That can work, but not when everyone is the same. The most annoying of these moustache-twirling villains was Oslo el Gustav and he got to be two villains. His ultimate demise happened at the lowest point of the series when it should have been a big finish. I’m not sure who was responsible though. Was it Gustav or the downward trend of the story?

Would you like some more?

So, here’s the thing. There was obviously a lot of things that the story never got around to explaining and that’s frustrating, especially to someone like me who wants to find out what happened. This series undoubtedly failed to build on the early season success, but I still want to know why they were brought to this world. I need answers and I’d be willing to sit through another average isekai season to get them.

What have you learnt?

A lot of the success of this series is pinned to the glorious character designs. There are so many girls that could all be considered waifu material. However, I think that can also be the downfall. This series was about seven characters being transported to another world and it tried to incorporate all of them, all of the time. It just got too much and made the story slow down unnecessarily.

I think it might have worked better if they had split up a little more and we followed one smaller group… or just isekai a smaller group. I can’t help but compare this to Grimgar: Ashes and Illusions which had a similar size cast, but fewer fringe characters and they functioned as a party for the most part rather than seven individuals. There were some great moments and it had a lot of potential. It just failed to capitalise on it.
