Please Put Them On, Takamine-san (Volume 4) – That Must be Tough for You!

Now that Takamine has met Eri, it’s quite clear that she doesn’t like her one bit. Oddly, the same cannot be said for Eri. Anyhow, Shirota has lots to deal with and as usual, he’s not too quick to notice what’s going on.

What happened?

As Shirota and Eri came out of the summer cram school, they bumped into Takamine, who just happened to be going for a walk. She suggested that they get something to eat nearby. Luckily, Eri knew a place and treated them all to drinks and a big bowl of fries. Things quickly became odd as Takamine started to tell Eri about the wickedly lewd things Shirota made her do for him. Of course, it didn’t happen that way, but Shirota wasn’t able to push back too much. As they left the cafe, Eri asked to speak to Takamine. She explained that she wasn’t interested in Shirota, they were old friends, and if anything, she was more interested in Takamine!

After completing the cram school, Shirota was ready to take on the new school year, however, Takamine had planned on taking him out to reward him for his efforts. Unfortunately, Shirota missunderstood and believed that it was he who needed to reward her for helping him. He kept trying to impress her, and she kept using her Eternal Virgin Road ability to undo the events. It was terribly confusing for Shirota, however, Takamine finally noticed that he was trying, although she never let him know.

As the new school year began, they needed to prepare for the Cultural Festival in which their class would be performing Cinderella. Of course, Takamine would be Cinderella, but she needed Shirota nearby if she needed to use her powers to perfect the performance. Somehow, she convinced him to put himself forward to play Prince Charming, but he lost and had to settle for Prince Charming’s guard, which was the role Takamine had planned for him to get all along. Either way, they would be spending more and more time together.

So, I completely forgot that I was three volumes into this series when I had my winter break and came back with a new selection of manga to cover. Well, I’ve caught up with everything and now find myself diving back into Please Put Them On, Takamine-san, and it’s like I’ve never been away. One interesting thing that I’ve noticed during my break is that the anime is airing and there have been some understandably outraged responses to the way Takamine blackmailed Shirota into being her closet.

I mentioned that I was surprised how dark it got in my review of volume one, however, at no point do I believe that Takamine was going to go through with that threat. Had Shirota simply said no, I think she would have undone the accusation. That doesn’t excuse her actions and I can see why that would put people off. As far as I’m concerned, Takamine has been in love with Shirota for a long time. They used to visit a park together as children, but he’s somehow forgotten about her. She’s been alone and using her powers to redo so many things that she doesn’t know how to interact with people.

Takamine reminds me of Diablo from How Not to Summon a Demon Lord. He’s terrible around people so he hides behind an edgy persona. The best thing with this series now is that Eri can see through her. She knows that Takamine likes Shirota and she knows that Shirota is as dense as it comes and has such low self-esteem that he would never believe her advances were real, especially as she’s usually hiding them behind her edgelord pretense that she is teasing him. This volume ended with her trying to really tell him how she felt, but he was too dense to even allow that to happen. I think we need Eri to talk for each of them… if she can stop touching Takamine’s boobs, that is!
