Please Put Them On, Takamine-san (Volume 5) – What Was My Line Again!?

What happened?

The big performance is coming up and Shirota is panicking. He has no idea how he’s going to stand up in front of everyone and perform. Takamine noticed his mental state and dragged him away to remind him that his role is inconsiquential and that she isn’t going to accept him ruining her big performance. Oddly, that seemed to calm him, however, he noticed the other students watching them. Rather than allow Takamine’s reputation be ruined he takes her into the haunted house. However, Takamine doesn’t appear to be too good with spiders, and it’s all spiders. After running on ahead, she managed to get herself tangled in a web in a very comprimising position. With the next group coming, Shirota is forced to pretend to be part of the show and scare them away… kind of…

Of course, all of this was part of Takamine’s plan to release her nervous energy… When they got back to the class, there was still no sign of Prince Charming. Then, he stumbled in, bloody and injured. There’s no way he can perform in the show. Takamine nominates Shirota since his role could easily be dropped. He has no choice but to accept. However, when it’s finally his time to go on, he freezes, forgetting his lines. Takamine removes her panties and rewinds time. She gives him another sharply worded piece of encouragement and then they continue. This time, he nails his lines. However, he also needs to replace Takamine’s panites…

As the show reaches the climax, everything seems to be going well. Then, the original Prince Charming limps onto the stage declaring that Shirota is a fake Prince Charming. Takamine is about to undo time once more, but Shirota adlibs a convincing speach and asks Cinderella (Takamine) to choose. She kisses Shirota and they then run away through the cheering audience. The revised ending was a massive success and it may have just opened up a new path to social acceptance for Shirota.

I loved this volume. It was a wild ride, especially when Shirota was under Takamine’s skirt replacing her panties on stage. She just loves to push things as far as they can go with him, which is, of course, all a cover for the way she actually feels about him. I love how she always seems to have something pointed or cutting to saw but somehow manages to convince Shirota that it’s in his best interest. Surprisingly, it often is, but does that just mean that Shirota is a masochist who can’t help but enjoy being put down by her?

After the success of the show, Takamine decided to reward Shirota by being a maid for their next study session. Unfortunately, she only had a maid bikini… I don’t see anyone complaining.. Anyhow, that was hilarious, especially when she gave Shirota a massage, pretending that she was naked at the time. Of course, that led to an unfortunate situation that Shirota was very keen to hide and Takamine thought was a good thing to tease him about, although I think they both ended up quite flustered.

This volume ended with Shirota being invited to go to karaoke with his classmates. At first, he turned them down because he had a study session with Takamine. Then, she got a cold and was going to cancel it anyway, but he still showed up to look after her. Apparently, this too was a test, so she undid the moment that she caught a cold and told him they were going to karaoke together so that she could make sure he didn’t screw everything up. Now, this is a staple of the awkward high school romance, and the thing that I think is worth noting here is that I don’t think Takamine has any actual friends so this is going to possibly help her to open up to others, and Shirota. It should be interesting.
