Super HxEros (Season One)
Earth has been invaded! If you see what looks like someone dressed in cosplay as a giant bug, you may be their next target! The Kiseichuu, however, are not looking to harm you, they just want to drain your H-energy!
What did you watch?
It looks like I’m back to catching up on my shortlisted titles from the Summer 2020 anime schedule and I’ll be honest, I’m enjoying binge-watching these shows a lot more than watching them weekly. It could be that these shows are just better, but there’s a chance that it’s the total immersion that comes with binge-watching. Either way, this is Super HxEros or Dokyuu Hentai HxEros if you prefer. Now, based on the titles it should be abundantly clear what I’m getting into. This is an ecchi title about superheroes fighting alien bugs that are stealing human’s ability to get aroused… There will be spoilers… among other things…
What happened?
Enjou Retto is your average high school boy. He attends classes and fantasizes about his former childhood friend, Hoshino Kirara. However, something happened between them five years ago and things have never been the same. Oh, and Retto is also a member of an Earth Defence Force and uses erotic energy to fight alien bugs that are determined to steal all the erotic energy on Earth and force the humans to die out. See, just your average high school boy!
When one of these bugs, known as the Kiseichuu attacks their school, Retto saves Kirara and reveals his secret identity. He also reveals a lot more as his attacks are so powerful that his clothes literally disintegrate around him. It also turns out that Kirara has an abundant source of H-energy and is quickly recruited to be a member of the team, all be it a little reluctantly. What happened between Retto and Kirara all those years ago and just how much pent up energy is Kirara sitting on?
What did you think?
I came into this expecting to have a good laugh and I got it. Admittedly, however, I didn’t expect to get so involved in the characters and their stories. Yes, it is an ecchi and a harem series, yes it does go over the top on numerous occasions and defies logic all too often, but that’s part of the fun of these types shows. If I’m honest, I loved it and enjoyed pretty much the entire thing. The first episode was fun but it didn’t really get going until a couple of episodes later. By then, I was invested in Kirara’s back story and was just having a blast. All of the Kiseichuu have different abilities and ways to drain the H-energy and that just made things that much funnier.
What was your favourite moment?
In typical Power Ranger style, the team rescued the Kiseichuu princess, Chacha who had been abandoned by the Queen as she was a mutation. Chacha has the opposite power to most Kiseichuu in that she can enhance someone’s H-energy. So, when the team went to take down a bug that was putting people into dreamlike states to steal their energy, Chacha was able to wake Retto so that he could defeat it. However, two more HxEros from the Tokyo branch intervened and decided that Chacha was a target for being a Kiseichuu. Retto fought back and tried to protect Chacha. In order to resolve their differences, Retto agreed to a duel with Murasame Shiko, an eye patch wearing ice maiden.
The duel was unlike anything you might expect and seemed to be about getting the opponent to overload on H-energy. Basically, who gets the other so horny that they couldn’t continue. Sounds like Retto didn’t stand a chance, but then Chacha bit him and activated a Beast Mode which is just pure unadulterated lust. He won and broke down Murasame’s defences leaving her begging for more… It’s so ridiculous, but incredibly funny all at the same time.
What was your least favourite moment?
I don’t really have a least favourite moment, but I will say that Hoshino’s story was quite sad. She had been full of life and had fallen for Retto from a young age, but then an encounter with a Kiseichuu where it tried to drain Hoshino of H-energy and was destroyed by the sheer volume of it left her feeling ashamed. It ended their relationship and sent her on a path of repression and self-loathing. I loved her story as she tried to overcome this and made small steps towards being honest with herself. I really wasn’t expecting anything quite as deep when I started this series.
Who was your favourite character?
How do I pick a favourite character from this cast? It’s actually a lot harder than you would imagine. Retto was a fairly standard self-insert protagonist, but also a lot of fun. All of the girls were great for any number of reasons, but I feel like I’m going to have to go with Murasame just for being a little more edgy than the other. I don’t know if we’ll get a second season, but if we do I’d like to see the two teams working together more. That way we’d get more Murasame and more conflict between her and Hoshino, both vying for Retto’s attention… or not… it’s complicated.
Who was your least favourite character?
He was probably one of the most awkward and weird characters and while I didn’t dislike him, he seems like the obvious choice for this section. I am, of course, talking about Retto’s uncle and his bizarre wardrobe choice. He was quite funny in a peculiar kind of way, but that’s the best I can come up with.
Would you like some more?
I would love some more. This is exactly the kind of goofy series that I love to unwind to. It’s quite the contrast to my usual preferences of dark and serious sci-fi and fantasy, but it’s good to have an escape from that too. Sometimes, I just want to have a good laugh and these shows are great for that. I’m sure there are those that might get offended by the content, but they are clearly playing right into the Kiseichuu’s hands. Don’t let them take your H-energy!
What have you learnt?
I feel like a lot of people will view this sort of series as trashy and degrading, however, I think that there really is no reason to get upset. There’s also no reason to even worry about what others think. Entertainment is a form of escapism. Anything is possible and I think anime makes that even more of a reality. It’s certainly one of the reasons I’m drawn to this medium. All of these different genres can exist in the same world and rightly so. It makes me happy to know that anyone should be able to find something that they will enjoy. It also means that whatever story you create, there will be an audience for it. Sometimes, you just have to find them. So, create what you want and don’t worry about what everyone thinks. You can’t please all of the people all of the time!

My only major complaint is the over the top, aggressive censorship. I mean, even lingerie got shadowed or the light fog of hiding?
That aside, I think your review nailed it.
No qualms with your favorite character. I’d be tempted to say Momoka Momozono. She always tried her best, even if was embarrassing. Loved her attitude.
Yeah, there was the point where Murasame sent Retto lingerie photos and they showed the photo she sent but not her taking the photo. I’ve noticed the censorship getting worse lately, to the point that it makes everything look far worse than it actually is.
Momoka was awesome too. I really liked them all really and it was great that they all had their own way to power up. I had to laugh at the guy from Tokyo branch being a voyeur and pushing Retto on top of the girls on the beach to power up.
