Author Journey (March 13, 2023)

2023 03 13 The Otaku Author Journey

This last week was mostly concerned with the day job, sleepless nights, pain, release, and more pain. Things are moving in the right direction so hopefully, it’ll be back to normal in the near future!

Author Journey (March 13, 2023)

I finally got to see someone about my knee and the results are leaving me with mixed feelings. I don’t have any surgery planned so that’s a good thing, however, part of me wants to know that the problem is going to be fixed and that we’re not just hoping for the best… Oh, well. I guess we’ll have to wait and see. In the meanwhile, the splint is off so there was a bit more pain than normal, but flexibility is increasing. We wouldn’t have these problems in a digital world… just saying!

The Weekly Recap!

As a result of all the anime I watched the week before, I started the week with three episode reviews to write up, which is why I added them to my weekly goal. I got through those first thing Monday morning and then watched and reviewed another episode of the same series. It’s the one that pulled me in and wouldn’t let go. The crazy schedule left me doing things a little differently. I ended up watching the remaining five episodes one night when I couldn’t sleep. Of course, that meant I had another backlog of posts to clear.

Those had to wait until Friday, however, as the day job occupied all my time during the middle of the week. I had some impossible tasks to complete and amazingly managed to do them. It’s always nice when you do something that no one was really expecting you to do. Even if it did take more time than I really had available to it. Oh, well. It’s done now. So, where were we? That’s right, I watched six episodes of anime in all which wasn’t a bad week. I also squeezed in one volume of manga and thoroughly enjoyed it.

That meant, I ended up writing up nine episode reviews, one season review, one manga review, and then this one, so I had planned on scheduling four posts but came away with twelve. Not a bad return considering I spent three full days (evenings included) working on the project for the day job.

And that was all I had time for. Sadly, I didn’t even get to do a couple of scribbles in my sketchbooks. Time really was at a premium this week and since I was failing to get much sleep everything was a bit of a chore. On top of that, the week ended with one of the Real-Life Family Events, although this one was planned and will keep me busy until Friday of this week. That’s going to make it hard to do much of anything.

I didn’t do any more outlining for my series and barely thought about it such was the strain on my focus this week. Hopefully, I’ll start to see some changes with my knee that will allow me to get some uninterrupted sleep again. I find I don’t need loads, but it can’t be broken sleep. That messes everything up.

Aspirations for the Week!

So, as I just mentioned, this week is going to be basically just a weekend and maybe a couple of evenings and realistically, I’m going to focus on reading some of my old first drafts to get my head back into the story. It’s going to be a busy week on the Real-Life Family Event front which would have been tiring even without my knee issues, so I’m expecting to be exhausted by the time the weekend comes around. At least, I won’t have the day job to worry about.

Watching Anime

I’m not planning on watching anything but if I do, it’ll be another situation where I watch it in bed and review it sometime later, probably over the weekend. Best not to commit to anything here.

Goal: 0 Episodes

Reading Manga

There is one series that I am reading digitally as the physical copies are impossible to find so I might buy the next volume and read that. Again, that’s might.

Goal: 0 Books

Posts Scheduled

I’m going to fall back to the one post planned for this week again and that will be next week’s Author Journey. If I manage more, I’ll be amazed.

Goal: 1 Post

Chapters Written

I can definitely squeeze in some reading so I’d like to read the next four drafts that would make up the outline of book five. I’ll be making notes as I go so will attempt to get an outline done.

Goal: 1 Book Outline

Artwork Completed

I’d love to take a sketchbook with me and might do that, although it will be hard to commit to drawing much. Again, it’s going to be a case of if I can I will.

Goal: Some Doodles

The Hidden Dungeon Only I Can Enter (Episode 10) – Let’s Go to the Hot Springs

Final Thoughts

This is the least committed I’ve been to a set of goals this year and I have a good reason for that. The Real-Life Family Event will keep me occupied from Sunday to Friday. I have some ideas of possible times to do things, but there’s always a chance that they won’t work out. That’s why I have barely any goals going into this week.

The freedom to pick and choose what I’m working on has worked for the last couple of weeks. The danger is that I’ll slip back into focusing purely on anime and manga and not giving the other parts of my goals much attention. Having the different sections does make it clear that I need to work on all of them and once things settle down for me at home, I’ll be back to setting goals again. As with all good goals, they need to be achievable and at the moment, I have no idea how anything will work out. That’s why I’m keeping it light.

With the volume of manga that I read this week, I now have all my manga reviews scheduled for quarter two. There are three weeks left in quarter one so that’s a nice little achievement. I’ve got a little way to go to say the same about my anime reviews, but I’m getting there. Anyhow, it’s back to the Real-Life Family Event for me. Thanks for reading.

  1. I hope the medical folks can get your knee on the path to healing. Not knowing exactly what’s going on has got to make it worse!

“he danger is that I’ll slip back into focusing purely on anime and manga and not giving the other parts of my goals much attention.”

Some of my RLFEs happen so often that sometimes the only writing I can get done is the anime review kind. I don’t need two hours of uninterrupted time to write the reviews, and I can start/stop the episodes as needed. It’s a pain, and each interruption reduces the quality of the output. But nowhere near to the extent it would for a novel.

Still, I think you’ve proven that setting goals not only organizes the work, it helps analyze when you can’t get to the work — which helps make planning and work both more effective in the future. The key is to maintain forward motion and positive attitude. Which doesn’t seem to get easier as time goes on…

    • The most frustrating thing is that I saw three doctors and all came to a slightly different conclusion. It’s almost like they’re making it up as they go. Hopefully, it’ll get better and then I can focus on strengthening and working on my flexibility.

It’s so true. Writing a post is less taxing and doesn’t require the focus that novel writing does. I’m definitely not going to stop using weekly goals as it does help me realize where the time goes and how to improve it.

Looking forward to a return to some level of normality… lol!
