What happened?

All Ikki has to do to get his father off his back is to beat one last opponent. Unfortunately, it’s Toudou Touka, the student president and number one ranked fighter. If only that was his only problem. Akaza has thrown one last hitch in the plan by making Ikki get to the stadium on foot. He doesn’t have his phone with him either which Akaza confiscated. Time is running out and Ikki who is already worn down from his ordeal with the ethics committee is struggling to keep going.

However, just when all seems lost, he finds Shizuku waiting for him. She tells him to give up but knows that he won’t. There’s also a crowd of Ikki’s friends cheering him on. Then, he sees Stella. She won her final match and is waiting for him to join her.

Amazingly, Ikki made it to the match in time, although it’s starting now and he has no time to recover. With his body already feeling like he’s been fighting for days, he decides that he will need to focus all of his energy on one attack. If he waits, he’ll be spent in no time. It’s an all-or-nothing strategy, but he has faith in his abilities.

As soon as the match begins, Ikki activates Ittou Shura and charges forwards. Toudou Touka sees what he’s doing and realises that she just needs to avoid the one attack and victory will be hers. Just make him miss. She throws everything into her powers, charging her lighting abilities. Ikki runs forward, pushing his body beyond anything he’s ever done before. They meet in an instant and then there’s silence.

The crowd is stunned to see Toudou Touka drop to the floor. A triumphant Ikki holds his fist in the air, struggling to stay on his feet. It’s not over for him though as Akaza races into the arena to take care of him himself, but Stella gets there first and smacks him out of the way. Stella congratulates Ikki and also berates him for being reckless. However, Ikki then asks Stella to become his family, and she, of course, says yes!

What did you think?

I still feel like the end of the last episode was a bit too much of a tone shift for the series, but I will concede that it was necessary to set up this episode, which was incredible. In the end, it should be obvious that the world they live in has a darker side. They’re kids fighting with magic and weapons after all. Anyhow, what a build-up to the fight, which was explosive and spectacular. There may have only been one attack, but it put me on the edge of my seat. If anything, this was the most realistic sword fight in the series.

I really enjoyed this series and wish it had been given a little more time to develop things. It would have been nice to see the darker side of the world earlier so that it wasn’t so jarring when it did happen, but I can live with it as is. The best thing about this series was the relationship between Ikki and Stella which actually felt real.
