Is It Wrong to Try to Pick up Girls in a Dungeon? (Season One)

Bell Cranel lives with his Goddess, Hestia as part of the smallest and most insignificant Familia in Orario. He dreams of becoming a great adventurer and Hestia will do everything she can to make that happen.
What did you watch?
I had been planning on watching this series since the end of 2018. After reading Karandi’s review of the light novel, I ran out and grabbed the first nine volumes of the manga. It didn’t take me long to get through them, but I managed to hold back on watching so that I could include Is it Wrong to Try to Pick up Girls in a Dungeon in my A to Z Anime Challenge. You’re probably wondering why I would wait. Well, that’s just the sort of person I am. Anyhow, enough about me, let’s talk about the show which will include spoilers.

What happened?
Bell Cranel wants to be an adventurer. He tried to find a Familia that would take him in and allow him to grow, but because of his size, everyone turned him away. That was until Hestia offered to give him her blessing. She now has a Familia of two, including herself, but Bell is fine with that. He loves Hestia and will fight to get stronger and prove he’s worthy of her.
On one adventure, he is cornered by a Minotaur that had escaped from deep in the dungeon and found itself on a floor it shouldn’t have been on. Bell could only cower in fear as it closed in. Then, at the last second, he is saved by Aiz Wallenstein, a famous sword maiden. He instantly falls in love with her and sets out to become strong enough to gain her attention.

What did you think?
I had already fallen in love with this series when I read the manga, so the anime was a formality. It is incredible. Bell is an honest and hard-working character who sees the benefit of his work. He’s lucky enough to acquire a skill that helps him advance quicker, but he’s still got to put the work in. His drive to impress the women in his life really is the fire that keeps him going. Also, this was one of those series where I would never skip the OP and mostly because of this moment. Try not to smile.

What was your favourite moment?
There were so many great moments like the time Bell defeated the Minotaur or when he levelled up, even the training with

What was your least favourite moment?

Who was your favourite character?
There are so many interesting characters that I could list out most of them here. Bell is obviously my favourite character, but I’d also give a shout out to Ryu Lion and Welf

Who was your least favourite character?
Any of Liliruca’s Familia members. Those guys are arseholes and deserved everything they got. I’m not even going to talk about them too much, because I’m going to get mad.

Who needs more screen time?
Ryu Lion has a lot of history that could really be looked into, but I’d equally want to see more of

Would you like some more?
In the Summer of 2019, not too long after watching this season, the second season aired and I covered it back on my old site. With season three coming in the near future, I’ve decided to rerelease my episode reviews for season two. There’s also a movie and a spin-off season that I haven’t yet had a chance to watch. I guess I’ll be off now as I need to track them down. Watch this series, you won’t be disappointed.

Nice review. I am really excited about the sequel that was announced because I’ve been wanting a second season of this since the first finished. Though I’m now so far ahead in the light novels it will be interesting watching the second season knowing where the story is going to see whether it is as fun as season one was. Either way, really excited about it.
Yeah, ever since I read the manga I’ve been desperate to watch this so took a Crunchyroll trial and will probably keep it for a while. It was extra nice that the manga I’d read got me up to episode 12, leaving 13 as new territory. Now I just need to find the spinoff series too.
I wasn’t a big fan of the spin-off anime and didn’t actually finish it. Mostly because I just don’t find Aiz or Loki familiar that interesting without Bell in the mix.
That’s interesting. Yeah, Bell and Hestia really are the life of the show.
