Otherside Picnic (Episode 10) – How to Get to the Barbeque Restaurant by Elevator

Otherside Picnic Title

After inviting Sorawo and Toriko to a Japanese barbecue, Akari gets lost in the elevator and ends up in the space between worlds. Sorawo and Toriko rush to save her, but even they have no idea what to expect!

What happened?

Sorawo had an odd experience at home in the bathroom where her reflection didn’t quite seem to match. The figure staring back at her had long black hair… Once she put her glass back on, however, it appeared to go back to normal. Before she had a chance to really think about it Toriko phoned and invited her to a Japanese barbecue with Akari and Kozakura.

She hurried to get there on time and found Toriko waiting for her outside. Toriko explains that Akari had gone inside to get a table and Kozakura was on the way. However, they got a call from Akari telling them that the elevator started acting weirdly and now she is lost in the building. Then she says that she can see them waving to her and hangs up.

They quickly realise that Akari had ended up in the space between worlds and that every elevator in a building with more than ten floors could become a portal to the Otherside. With no time to lose, they hurried inside and stepped into the elevator. Kozakura rushed in just as the doors were closing and instantly regretted it.

When the doors opened on the fifth floor, they saw Akari in the distance. Sorawo called to her, but she kept walking away from them. They exited the elevator and hurried after her. Every time they got close, Akari would disappear.

After a while, they managed to get close enough to grab her shoulder. Akari was surprised to discover they were behind her as she had been following them for some time now. That was when they noticed another figure coming towards them surrounded by a blue cloud.

They ran and ran and ran, but the blue cloud kept coming. If they could just get to the elevator they might be able to escape. After a lot of screaming, they reached it and hammered the button waiting for the door to open. The blue cloud got closer and closer.

At the last second, the doors opened and everyone fell inside. Toriko hit the buttons and the door closed. They breathed a sigh of relief and then the blue cloud pulled open the doors and flooded in. Sorawo woke and saw the doors open onto a fiery landscape. A girl dressed in black with long black hair stood amidst the flames. Sorawo ungloved Toriko’s hand and used it to escape from the Otherside!

What did you think?

Amazing! These episodes just seem to get creepier and creepier. The space between worlds was incredibly bizarre and seemed to use a host of weird and wonderful ideas. A lot of it we’ve already seen before which gave it even more credibility. As much as I love seeing just Toriko and Sorawo, it’s also nice to have Kozakura and Akari around. I knew I would warm up to Kozakura after a while.

I mentioned in another review that the order of things seemed to be a bit out of whack and this episode seemed to confirm that further. At the end of the beach episode, they used Lady Hasshaku’s hat to escape from the Otherside, destroying it in the process. At the beginning of this episode, Sorawo was talking about rescuing the American soldiers and asked if Toriko still had the hat…

What have you learnt?

I’m even more convinced that there is some sort of link between Sorawo and Satsuki. Could Satsuki be Sorawo from the future trying to stop something from happening in the past? It’s a possibility! The way this series has teased their connection has been great and even with the episodes not necessarily in the order they should have been.

So, let’s talk about continuity. For some things, it isn’t that important, however, unlike the mysterious link between Sorawo and Satsuki, having items and not having items when you should or shouldn’t have them is kind of a big deal. While it didn’t hurt this time, probably because I’m so invested in the story already, it can pull the audience out of the experience and any time that you give the audience a chance stop watching and walk away some will. You want to grab them and pull them into your world. Don’t even give them a chance to escape.
