Otherside Picnic (Episode 6) - The Meat Train

Sorawo and Toriko arrived at the makeshift military base on the Otherside. They were given a tent to sleep in, some food and water, and warned not to attempt to use their phones. Seriously, don’t use your phone!

What happened?

The acting commander for the group of marines welcomed them to the base and took their word that they had not been affected by the Otherside, which was lucky for them. They were taken to a vacant tent and give some food and water. Before leaving them the marine told them not to use their cell phones. Once he was gone, they were surprised that the cell phones would work on the Otherside, so they called Kozakura.

Amazingly, the call connected and they were able to talk for a while. However, then something weird happened and they started to receive a strange message. Within seconds of that happening the base went into full alert. They came outside to find all of the soldiers preparing for battle.

A giant many-faced creature swept down from the hills and seemed to taunt them, driving many of the marines mad in the process. It would appear that their phone call had brought it down upon them. Sorawo and Toriko thought about escaping, but they needed to do something to make up for what they did.

Toriko had somehow acquired a huge gun and was preparing it to attack. Sorawo guided her with her ability to see the true nature of the monster. However, Toriko’s shot sailed through it without hurting it. Sorawo took the gun and tried to shot it with Toriko supporting her. She hit and the monster disappeared.

The marines were overjoyed and extremely thankful to Toriko and Sorawo, however, one of them noticed that Sorawo’s coloured contact lens had fallen out revealing her blue eye. The soldiers accused them of being monsters and chased them.

Toriko and Sorawo ran to the station just as the train was arriving. They searched for a way to escape, but then Sorawo noticed that there was a gate on the train. She convinced Toriko to trust her and they jumped onto the moving train, using Toriko’s hand to grab the gate and pull them through.

The inside of the train was a horrific and gruesome sight. So much so that Sorawo, covered Toriko’s eyes and shielded her from witnessing it. She passed out and woke up with Toriko on a sandy beach. Could this be Okinawa? The Marines were stationed there when they vanished.

What did you think?

This series is outstanding. It is just so creepy that I get chills writing the reviews of the episode just because I’m having to recall what happened. The stuff with the cell phone was intense and I don’t think we’ve quite seen the last of that. I’m glad that things didn’t go quite the way I was thinking with this episode although it was quite clear that it was certainly a possibility had they stuck around.

Of course, my big concern now is that they are still at the Otherside. This beach is not back in their world and it’s all just another illusion put on by some sort of monster. They got us to the point where we can’t believe anything we see, not even when we’re following Sorawo.

What have you learnt?

The unreliable narrator is such an interesting concept and when done well it impacts literally everything in the story. We’ve seen Sorao think that she was trying to help Toriko when in fact she was being tricked. We still don’t know exactly what happened at the big-head village and how they got separated. This all makes it harder and harder to believe anything we see and hear.

We’re at the point where none of this could be real. I hope that’s not the case as the “it was all a dream ending” is my least favourite thing in all of storytelling. There’s nothing quite like having your time wasted like that. Anyhow, I’m quite certain that things are not about to get any easier for Sorao and Toriko in the next episode. It should be interesting.
