Otherside Picnic (Episode 5) – Station February

After taking Kozakura for a meal to apologise for abandoning her, Sorawo and Toriko had a make up meal, however, on the way home, they suddenly found themselves in the Otherside at night!
What happened?
After Kozakura, Toriko ordered another round of food. It seemed like a lot, and it was, but Sorawo seemed to be relieved that things were getting back to normal. That was when Toriko got the hat that they found when they escaped from Lady Hasshaku and put it on. Nothing good can come of this.
Once they’d finished eating they asked for the bill to be separated between their meal and the meal with Kozakura, however, the waiter appeared to be in a trance and was muttering something unusual. They left the cafe and started walking to the station. Things were already starting to seem odd and then everything changed.
They found themselves in the Otherside at night. Neither of them had been there at night. Toriko recalled how Satsuki had said it was too dangerous to go there at night. Sorawo wanted to sit tight and hope they could wait it out, but Toriko pointed out that they might need to change their plan…

A strange robotic creature appeared carrying bodies beneath its belly. They didn’t wait to see what was going on, instead opting to turn and run. The thing gave chase and then something else emerged from the grass. They ran as fast as they could and ended up on a train track.
Suddenly, Toriko grabbed Sorawo and pushed her to the ground, holding her head down. A barrage of gunfire appeared, killing the second creature. A group of marines moved along the tracks and spoke to Toriko and Sorawo. It would appear that they are from Okinawa, which is quite some way from Tokyo where Toriko and Sorawo were.
They had no time to rest, however, as a giant horned man appeared on the tracks with the robot following close behind. The marines stood their ground and eventually, the horned man walked off and the robot followed.
The marines revealed that they have been trapped in the Otherside for a month now and have set up a base at the station. They took Sorawo and Toriko back to the station where they were met with suspicious eyes.

What did you think?
I literally cannot get enough of this show right now. There’s a quality to it that reminds me of Doctor Who. Maybe it’s the bizarre and weird happenings or the way it puts you on the edge of your seat. Either way, it’s fantastic. Throwing them into the Otherside at night without their guns was a cruel and brilliant move.
My big worry now is the group of marines. I understand that they are not going to trust Toriko and Sorawo, but I also worry about a base full of men suddenly having two college girls to watch over. I’ve seen this scene too many times to imagine that nothing is going to go wrong. I just hope that Toriko and Sorawo can get out of there before it happens. Also, as this was the first of a two-parter, we have to wait until the next episode to find out…

What have you learnt?
One thing that I’m really enjoying is how the Otherside feels like a character in itself. It’s kind of ambivalent and a bit of a trickster. Without any clear villain at this stage, the Otherside appears to have taken on that role with a degree of relish. It’s creepy and full of terrifying nasties. The robot with the bodies dangling from its belly is just another great addition to the list of monsters. Of course, what it’s doing with the giant horned man is yet another unanswered question.
I do hope that we will start to get some answers. Not because we necessarily need them, but because I just want to know more about this world and how it works. I mentioned Doctor Who for the vibe, but I also feel like Stranger Things should get a mention. So, if you like either of those shows, chances are you’re going to eat this series up.
