After their encounter with the Slit-Mouthed Woman, Momo was relieved to make it back home. However, Seiko knew that things were far from over. For the next week, she and Vamola would have to stay hidden between 22:00 and 05:00.
Dandadan (Volume 10) – This is the Power of Words!
What happened?
Vamola was quickly becoming quite the attraction in Okarun classroom thanks to her cute appearance. Everyone was keen to help her learn about customs and the language. They also wanted to know everything about her and were particularly curious about her connection to Okarun. However, Kinta is upset that she is still attaching herself to Okarun despite him being the one to pilot the robot that defeated her, not that anyone in the class believes him. When Momo, Aira, and Jiji come to get them, they discuss the golden ball that Vamola powers her suit with and decide that it can’t be Okarun’s missing testicle since her suit was clearly built to use it and she had it a lot longer. Momo decides to show Turbo Granny the ball and she’s disgusted by it, claiming it to be a human’s karma.
Regardless, the most pressing issue is the fact that Momo didn’t defeat the Slit-Mouthed Woman, instead only sending her away for a short period of time. Seiko warned that she would be back and that no one had ever defeated her. Momo and Vamola had to stay in their room between 22:00 and 05:00. They had to cover or remove every mirror and under no circumstances should they look out the window, especially if they heard someone they know calling to them. Well, that first night, Momo heard Okarun who was telling her that he would stay outside to keep her safe. Then, he told her that he was doing it because he loved her. Momo wanted to see him but at the last second tricked the Slit-Mouthed Woman into revealing herself. It was a long night, but they survived. Only six more to go… However, they might not even make it to the next night as something sinister is already coming their way!

What did you think?
This was another improved volume which is great. I’m glad that the series feels like it’s starting to build towards someone special once more. The revelation about the Slit-Mouthed Woman was a nice touch, adding even more terror and even a little bit of drama as she pretended to be Okarun and confessed her love for Momo. Of course, Okarun then told Vamola that he loved Momo, which came at a bad time as she was clearly trying to warn him about the impending attack. And what an attack it was! I loved that the group was split up which allowed for three simultaneous battles. Aira was stuck with Jiji who wouldn’t help her after turning into the Evil Eye, although they did manage to escape. The aliens hunting them gave up because of the number of orbs. Presumably, that is the number of spirits since it’s been hinted that the spirits are the only thing stopping an all-out alien invasion.
Okarun was caught on his own and while putting up a good fight, he wasn’t able to defeat them. In fact, they appeared to take his testicle that he had recovered using the Serpoian’s technology. He was only saved by the Mantis Shrimp Alien. It would appear that the humidity and gravity of Earth were an issue for them so they retreated. Meanwhile, Momo was at work but needed to get home before ten or the Slit-Mouthed Woman would find her. However, when she tried to leave, she couldn’t and discovered that the entire maid cafe was actually full of creepy-looking men with unibrows. How was she going to get out of this? The action is this volume was excellent. I can’t wait to dive into the next one.

What was your highlight?
The best of the fights was Momo versus the strange unibrowed men. I loved that moment when she turned around and saw them all staring at her in place of the normal-looking people she had just been talking to. She tried to fight back with her telekinetic abilities, but there were too many of them. Then, just when it looked like she was done for, she was saved by a Serpoian! He told her that they had been attacked by another alien race who took their technology and corrupted their clones. He asked her to help him press their heads with a pair of irons to turn them back. She reluctantly did, realising it was her only hope. However, there was another alien that was attacking from another dimension, turning the clones back to its side.
There was one moment where two Serpoians turned a clone to their side, were both then turned to the alien’s side and attacked the clone they’d just turned. It was wonderfully insane. In fact, the crazier these fights are the more enjoyable I’m finding them. Then, the Serpoian leader told Momo that only she could attack the alien in the other dimension using her powers. She wasn’t sure how though and as things got dire, she recalled a lesson Seiko taught her about giving words power. Momo then used her heart sequence from her Maid Cafe job and turned it into a powerful weapon. Just brilliant.
